Description

Lady Macbeth Ambition “Art not without ambition, but without. The illness should attend it” Reflects on her husband’s character. She knows that Macbeth is capable of ambitious dreams, but he is unwilling to display the ruthless behaviour which is necessary to achieve those dreams. This quote also suggests those who set their morality to a side will rise to greatness “A little water clears s of this deed. How easy it is, then” Lady Macbeth finds it easy to get rid of the guilt. This also means that whatever crime is committed it is very easy to get rid of. No need to fear when committing a crime to achieve your goal because there is always a way to get rid of the evidence. When lady Macbeth clears the off the blood with water it slightly boosts Macbeth’s confidence and encourages him to commit more ruthless crimes to accomplish his dreams as he saw how LM easily cleared off the blood “Yet I do fear thy nature, it is too full of milk of human kindness” She thinks Macbeth is too kind to be a king. He doesn’t have the killer instinct to get to the top. ‘Milk’ represents soft and unselfishness which implies that to reach to the top you have to spoil the milk as much as you can until you accomplish your goals “Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it” She is telling Macbeth to be two- faced, soft looking from the outside so no one suspects him and ruthless, full of cruelty from the inside to rise to the top. She implies that he must deceive the others for his own purpose and his own need. This quote also encourages Macbeth to be more cunning than he already is “Unsex me here”/” come you spirits” She starts to talk like the witches and asks the spirits to come and dehumanise or DE womanise her so she can help her husband achieve their plan. She wants to get rid of feminism in her and wishes to become a man “fill me from the crown to toe top full of direst cruelty”

She wants her soft emotions, motherly affections out of her and filled with cruelty in her so she becomes more successful in her plan to murder and achieve her goals. “Take my milk for gull” She wants milk (purity) taken away and filled with poison and cruelty. She wants to be masculine Violence “Pluck my nipples from his boneless gums. And dash’d the brains out” She is willing and ready to murder/ smash her own child just to accomplish their plan and rise to the top if that’s what it takes. She is also shaming her husband for questioning their plan. “My keen knife sees not the wound that it makes” She would have carried out the murder of Duncan if only he did not resemble father to LM Guilt “Come, come, come, give your hand. What’s done cannot be undone” They are her final words. They reveal how guilt has crushed her personality which was strong and assertive. No matter how much she repents, the violence and number of death cannot be undone. She has to be taken care of like a baby. It almost seems like she is not in her mental state at all. She is asking for support “Out, damned spot” She said that when she was sleepwalking, washing her hands. This tells us how bad she feels about all the horrible things her and Macbeth’s ambition caused. “All perfumes from Arabia will not sweeten this little hand” The smell of the blood is still with her and she recognises that she cannot fix this. She feels partially responsible for Macbeth’s actions and is very guilty as Macbeth was after LM death Courage “Screw your courage to the sticking place”

This quote means affix (stick) your courage to a place that will not abandon you Deceit “Beguile the time” To deceive the people of our time you must look like the people of our time with an expression on your face that befits (appropriate) “Look up clear” Ensure you maintain a clear expression because fear might show in your face which is vey dangerous to rise to the top...
