ECONOMICS 1220: PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS – Fall 2018 Course Format: Lecture 4 hours per week Credits: 3.0

Course Description Microeconomics is the study of how individuals or groups make choices with their limited resources in order to satisfy unlimited wants. In this course we will examine theories of how individuals, businesses and governments make these decisions. Specifically, we will be using microeconomic theories to explain the production and consumption of goods and services in individual markets. Different market structures will be considered as well as the economic implications of the different market structures and government policy.
Learning Outcomes The list provided below outlines the high-level learning outcomes for this course. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: •
define and discuss basic principles of economics such as scarcity, trade-offs, opportunity cost, marginal analysis, exchange, and markets
•
use the demand and supply model to analyze the impacts of events on market outcomes
•
calculate elasticities and apply them to analysis of market responses
•
compare the outcomes of different types of market structures such as perfect competition, monopoly, and oligopoly
•
describe and illustrate how firms behave
•
analyze the impacts of government intervention on markets and provide economic rationales for such intervention
