Lanval analysis Throughout the text Lanval, Marie de France displays a constant theme of loyalty. Between Lanval’s loyalty to the king and the kings failed loyalty to his knight Lanval, these are just a few areas where loyalty is tested throughout the text. “For God’s sake speak to us! See here, two maidens are approaching us, most beautiful and decorous; surely one must be your amie,” Sir Gawain says during the trial when two of the maidens’ approach. Even though agreeing could have saved Lanval from the consequences of his trial, he proved his loyalty to the one he loved by stating he does not recognize or love the two ladies. Lanval chose a possible death over betraying his loved one, which ultimately proved just how loyal he was to her which possibly resulted in her saving him at the end. Marie portrayed loyalty in many characters of her text and frequency of it makes for belief that loyalty is a dominant trait in lovers....
