SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY LEARNING ACTIVITY 6 “WHEN TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANITY CROSS” NAME: Niña Kristine Alysa G. Diaz

DATE: January 5, 2022

COURSE/SECTION: BS Accountancy 1-4

STUDENT NO: 202111723

I. Complete the table by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of the following technologies. Technology Internet of things (2 points)

Virtual reality (2 points)

Brain implants (2 points)

Artificial Intelligence (2 points)

Artificial lifeforms (2 points)

Advantage Its advantages are; it reduces human effort, saves time, enhanced data collection, improved security, efficient resource utilization, reduced use of other electronic equipment, can be used in traffic systems, useful for safety concerns, and useful in healthcare industry. Virtual reality can be applied to multiple fields or areas. Said areas are: It can be used in medical studies to give opportunity to learners to gain more knowledge about the human body structure, it can be used on scientific research, in entertainment like in movies or in games, it can be used for driving simulations for student drivers or a student pilot, lastly it can be used in military training. Brain implant can improve ones senses and make you a better driver. A brain implant can also help you remember every word you hear in a meeting or conference. The future of brain implants holds many promising opportunities for us in the coming years. The advantages of artificial intelligence are: reduction in human error, take risks instead of humans, available 24 hours, can help in repetitive jobs, digital assistance, faster decisions, daily application, and new inventions. One of its advantage is that artificial life form is used to study essential properties of living systems such as evolution and adaptive behavior. Since there are millions of species and we don’t

Disadvantage Its disadvantages are; security issues, privacy concern, increased unemployment, the complexity of its system, high chance of it getting corrupted, lack of international standardization, High dependency on the internet, Reduced mental and physical activity. The disadvantages of virtual reality are: ,The equipments needed for virtual reality does not come cheap, it consists of hard to understand or complex technology, in the virtual reality environment we cannot move freely we are bound by limitations of our environment and connections

In most cases, brain implants target a specific group of neurons. However, brain tissue frequently moves around inside the skull, which could cause implants to slip from their intended locations, lose contact with the neurons, and become ineffective. This slipping can also result in more scarring. The disadvantages of artificial intelligence are: high cost of creation, making humans lazy, unemployment, cannot replace human emotions, and it lacks out of the box thinking. There Concerns about the ethical and policy implications of synthetic biology innovations have been raised previously in the context of other biological breakthroughs. Some critics have

know how to interact with them and study their behaviors, artificial life form aims to shed light on this issue by simulating lifelike processes within computers. It is often possible to discover something of life's essential character by creating highly simplified artificial "aliens" and comparing their development and behavior to real biology.

labeled the creation of artificial life forms as “playing God.” While genetically modified organisms may one day be used to cure cancer, they may also be used as biological weapons.

II. Make research on the following environmental problems then apply the concepts about Emerging Technological Ethical Dilemmas where Science and Technology intersect with society. 1. Describe the present status of the ozone layer. Cite recent research findings to support your answer. (5 points) “This is a large ozone hole because of the colder-than-average 2021 stratospheric conditions, and without a Montreal Protocol, it would have been much larger,” said Paul Newman, chief scientist for Earth sciences at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. As Stated in the website of DownToEarth (Antarctic Ozone Hole — One of the Largest, Deepest — Closes, 2021), the expansion of the hole was driven by a strong, stable and cold polar vortex and very cold temperatures in the stratosphere. According to a research (Substantial Antarctic Ozone Hole in 2021, 2021), the ozone hole reached its maximum extent on October 7, 2021, as calculated by the NASA Ozone Watch team. scientists also track the average amount of depletion—how little ozone is left inside the hole. Researchers from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service say that this year’s hole is growing quickly and is larger than 75% of ozone holes at this stage in the season since 1979. Though, according to new research of Meteorological Organizaition (Antarctic Ozone Hole Is Large and Deep), the ozone layer has slowly been recovering since the ban on halocarbons. Even Though, in research from Horton (2021), it is a slow process and it will take until the 2060s or 70s for a complete phasing-out of the depleting substances. During recent years with normal weather conditions, the ozone hole has typically grown to a maximum of 20 million sq km (8 million sq miles).

2.

discuss some research findings related to the specific impact of “Chernobyl explosion to mand and its environment within the past 30 years. (5 points) According to European Parliament’s research, some impacts of Chernobyl explosion to man and its environment within the past 30 years are radiation sickness and cataracts. Late effects are thyroid cancer, especially in children and adolescents, and leukaemia among exposed workers. The accident has also had important psychosocial effects. This is because of the immediate and short-term effects resulting from heavy fallout exposure. In research from Zablotska (2016), it is stated that mental health effects were the most significant public health consequence of the accident in the three most contaminated countries of Ukraine, Belarus, and the Russian Federation. Timely and clear communication with affected populations emerged as one of the main lessons in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

3. Are you in favor of establishing/operating a nuclear power plant in the Philippines? Why? Discuss pros And cons of building such facility in our country. (5 points)

I am personally in favor of establishing or operating a nuclear power plant in our home country, the Philippines. A nuclear power plant has a lot of benefits. Said benefits are, first, carbon-free electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear power plants use uranium as a fuel. Because of this fuel, it can produce carbon-free electricity. Second, small land footprint. Building a nuclear reactor can only occupy a small area of land. Third, nuclear power plants can produce a lot more power compared to fossil fuels and natural gas. Lastly, nuclear power plants are a more reliable energy source compared to solar panels and wind turbines. Nuclear power plants have many advantages, but they also have several disadvantages, including the fact that their fuel, uranium, is not renewable. Second, building a nuclear power plant is expensive. Third, it’s dangerous nuclear waste. Lastly, malfunctions at the nuclear power plant can be catastrophic....
