FHCE 4051 30 September 2020 Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl): Summary The documentary is centered around the Skateistan Schoolhouse and Skatepark in Afghanistan that teaches young girls from impoverished communities how to have courage. The first thing they learn in skateboarding is how to stand on the board with the five foot positions. Many of these girls had very empty lives that consisted of housework and sitting at home, before attending the school. The second lesson is how to push off the ground and turn their board. A lot of times, their girls go to school because it isn’t safe for them to travel to school by themselves, so Skateistan has a school bus and provides travel. Many of the children come from families where their mothers are not educated, because schools were closed during the war, which is probably why many families value their daughters getting educated and even play a sport before they are married off. Lesson three is how to “tik-tak” or how to control the board. The fourth lesson is learning how to skate the ramp. While these young girls are taught in school, there is still a war going on, so explosions are common, which instills fear in the children. However, aside from academics, the teachers teach the children how to be good people and courageous girls in a place where women are seen as lesser than. Then the older people talked of when the Taliban was in power and how strict their daily lives were, in particular how women were not allowed to go to school and had to be fully covered when outside. The documentary ends with the children talking of how they want to have careers when they grow up. The Skateistan School has since catered to over 7,000 young girls and boys in poor communities in Afghanistan....
