Writing Review...

Description

Writing Review Part one - What have you learned in this course about writing in general and writing arguments specifically? This semester, in English 1302, I have learned a lot from new styles of writing and organizing papers, to new types of papers such as a literary review essay. In previous years, I had never had to do a literature review before so Draft 1.1 and 1.2 were very new to me, and thanks to my professor, eventually I got the hang of how to sufficiently write a literature review with sufficient sources. When it came to the argumentative research paper, I was a more familiar with this type of writing assignment since I have done multiple argumentative essays throughout my academic career. However, my teacher was very helpful in bettering my writing by helping me to create a stronger counterargument and rebuttal and also organizing my paper to make sure the sources aren’t overpowering my own voice. Part two - What have you learned about finding, evaluating, and incorporating sources? What kinds of challenges did working with sources pose for you? This semester, I learned a lot more about finding and evaluating sources and which sources would be more credible to use for a literature review and eventually an argumentative research paper. I also learned how to write a literature review while sufficiently using sources that will provide good evidence to my topics. I also had to find a common theme among the 8 scholarly articles that we were required to find, which was new to me as well. Especially in the beginning of this semester, when it came to the literature review, I initially had troubles finding enough, or sufficient, sources that would contribute to my topic. Many times I would realize that my topic was too broad, or too narrow, or my sources were too old and didn’t really relate anymore. I also found troubles, at first, finding a common theme among the articles I eventually settled on. However, after I narrowed down my topic just enough and found my subtopics to help group my articles together into common themes, I eventually got the hang of the literary review. After writing my literary review, I realized that I would need to reorganize my paragraphs so it would provide more review on the articles and what they were talking about and what the results to the studies were. Also, I had to work on my organization so the paragraphs weren’t as repetitive and so they would also help to show how all the sources in the subtopics would contribute to the same findings through different studies. When it came to the research argument, I had a little more trouble starting because I had the literature review wired so deeply into my mind. After help from my professor, I eventually got back into the mind set and style of an argumentative research essay. Part Three - How has the writing you’ve done in 1302 transferred to the writing you have been asked to do in other courses this semester? In my other classes that I took this semester, I haven’t really been able to transfer the writing styles such as the literary review and research argument to my classes. However, I have been able to help my friend with his writings and been able to explain to him what a literature review is suppose to do and how to write one efficiently to where the sources were the backbone of the common theme. I was able to

help him, based on what he told me, with his literary reviews. Prior to this class, I would not have been able to be much help at all....
