LECTURE NOTES PSYCH 640 HISTORY OF COGNITIVE The following presentation will cover the definition of cognitive psychology and about the history of cognitive psychology. It will also explain how and why psychometric studies are used to study cognitive psychology. The benefits of research of psychometrics will also be discussed.

Cognitive Psychology is how our brain takes information into it and it determines who we process the information. It is how our brain thinks about certain things that we are introduced to (Anderson, 2010). It can be an aspect of cognitive learning and what learning styles one may use as different people may use different learning styles and then there are some that may use a combination of learning styles. It all depends on how our brain processes information and how we perceive the information that is taken into our brain. A person’s environment and culture can have an effect on how the brain will process types of information as well. Ulric Neiisser was the father of cognitive psychology and was the first one to really advocate it as a type of approach for research of it. While he worked he had one goal that he wanted to meet and that was to push psychology in the correct direction to where it needed to go. In the mid 1950’s it seemed that it became of great importance and more were actually starting to see what cognitive psychology was and how it could be used. By the late 1970’s it happened to be the most dominant approach to what was being used. And then computers where invented and that took cognitive psychology to an entirely different level and they were able to investigate the human mind with the new technology that they had and was able to validate the theory of the information process of the brain (Adolph, 2012). Psychometric is where it is the study of how the mental processes work and then the mental capacities. This is where there is a measurement in our brains of how we can handle information and how our brains interpret the information. Psychometric is a form of testing a person in order to find out certain information regarding the person. It is how we can be measured mentally. In psychometric studies two of the things that can be measured are knowledge and abilities of a person. This can be done by administering a psychometric test on an individual and then studying the results of the test. It can determine how knowledgeable the person is and what their abilities are. Some will do this testing when they are getting hired for a job and the employer wants to know if they will be a good fit with the company and the others who work there. The other two measurements that will be done when they are studying a person psychometrically would be to determine their attitudes and personality traits that they may have. By administering these tests they are able to see how a person’s brain functions and what types of attitudes they may have towards different situations. It can also determine what their personality traits are and how they respond to different things. It basically helps with the information processing and the measurement of this in a person. This is a field that can really tell someone about how they will behave in different circumstances and what the differences are between different individuals.

There are many competencies that the benefits of research in psychometrics can provide and they would include knowledge, abilities and personalities of a person. This can help to determine what an individuals job performance may be when they are gong through the hiring stage. Some employers administer a psychometric type of test when they are trying to decide if an individual will be a good fir for their company. These types of tests can give the benefits of being the most accurate that be can given. This PowerPoint gave a good explanation of what cognitive psychology is and how it can be used. There are many benefits and advantages of using cognitive psychology. It has come a long ways in the years when it first was discovered as explained in the history of cognitive psychology. The psychometric studies are a great way in order to find out what a person’s knowledge, abilities, attitude and, personality traits are. This can be used for many different things during a person’s lifetime. •
