Total Institutions ❖ Total institution - A setting in which people are isolated from the rest of society and manipulated by an administrative staff.

❖ Resocialization - Radically changing an inmate’s personality by carefully controlling the environment.

➢ Examples include: mental institutions, prisons (these are involuntary institutions) ➢ Examples of voluntary institutions include military and religious organizations. We will be watching a documentary on Jonestown (JONESTOWN PBS DOCUMENTARY The life and death of People’s Temple), the next assignment will be based on this documentary, there will also be extra credit on documentary on Waco: 1) What factors made Jonestown a total institution? 2) How was Resocialization accomplished? 3) What was the underlying ideology associated with the cult?...
