The learners demonstrate understanding of weathering and soil erosion shape the Earth’s surface and affect living things and the environment. The learners should be able to participate in projects that reduce soil erosion in the community. The learners should be able to investigate the extent of soil erosion in the community and its effects on living things and the environment. (S5FE-IVb-2) The learners should be able to enumerate the effects of Soil Erosion on landforms and living things. The Effects of Soil Erosion Erosion is the moving away or carrying away of soil. Soil may be carried away by water, wind, people, and animals. Soil will move as water flows through it. Food also carries soil with it. When wind blows, it carries away particles of sand. People carry away soil from one place to another through the footwear that they are using. Explain that the canyon was once flat ground and that flowing water dug down into the earth over a long time by moving the land away one piece at a time.

The teacher will present the materials to be used in the activity. To further understand what happens to lands if water is continuously poured, let the students have an activity.  Let the class perform an activity as one. Ask them to pick their group leader, secretary, and reporter.  Instruct the leaders to get the materials and worksheet to be used in the experiment.  Let the students be reminded of the standards in performing group activity. Let the learners perform an experiment on soil erosion. Then, answer the guide questions. (*See attached worksheet)

After the class have done answering the worksheets, ask the group reporter to present their work and share their answers and observations in front of the class. How can water change the shape of the land?  Water can carry tiny pieces of the Earth’s surface downstream, like how the Grand Canyon was formed by the flowing water of the Colorado River. How can water move pieces of the land far away?  Through the processes of weathering and erosion. Weathering is the process by which moving water breaks down soil, rock and minerals, and erosion is the process by which the flowing water transports soil and rock from one spot and deposits it elsewhere. What else can move land?  Wind, people, and animals What are some examples of erosion?  Wind breaking down rocks and carrying the particles away is an example of erosion. You can also see how over time a river carries soil downstream and makes rocks in the river smoother. What can help to reduce or stop water erosion?  Natural and manmade objects can block the water from eroding soil. Humans can plant grass or add mulch and stones on top of soil to keep it from moving away. What can help to reduce or stop wind erosion?  You could plant trees to slow down the wind. You could also add plants like grass, whose roots will keep the soil in the ground. Can anything slow down the movement of the land?  Increasing the amount of vegetative cover (from grass, plants, and trees, for example) on the ground is the most effective way to slow down the movement of the land.

Clear containers (shoe box size) Sand or soil (about the size of an adult fist per student group) Cups of water (100-150 ml per student group) Put one fistful of sand or soil on one side the container. Brainstorm how you could move some of the sand or soil from one side of the container to the other side using only water. Angle each container by propping one side up with a textbook so the water can flow downhill and across the container. Get small containers of water. Pour the water over the sand or soil. How does flowing water move pieces of the land? What would happen if we kept pouring water? How could we slow down erosion caused by moving water?
