III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES A. Engage 1. Drill

The learners explore soil erosion to understand the physical mechanisms behind the process of erosion and the impacts that sediment has. The learners are to participate in projects that reduce soil erosion in the community. The learners should be able to investigate the extent of soil erosion in the community and its effects on living things and the environment. (S5FE-IVb-2) The learners should be able to enumerate the effects of Soil Erosion on landforms and living things. The Effects of Soil Erosion Erosion is the moving away or carrying away of soil. Soil may be carried away by water, wind, people, and animals. Soil will move as water flows through it. Food also carries soil with it. When wind blows, it carries away particles of sand. People carry away soil from one place to another through the footwear that they are using. Observing, identifying, collaborating, investigating Awareness on the Effect of Soil Erosion Paper, pen, Videos, Multimedia PowerPoint LAS Science 5 Quarter 4 Week 2 Science 5 LM pp. 158-173

The teacher will show scrambled letters. The learners will form the word out from the scrambled letters.

TOSTDNEFOIAER - the action of clearing a wide area of trees

EWNHEARITG - breaking down of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth

ILSO - the upper layer of earth in which plants grow RINOSOE - the action or process of eroding

2. Motivation

SLFOOD - a rising and overflowing of a body of water especially onto normally dry land Show students a picture of the Grand Canyon. Explain that the canyon was once flat ground and that flowing water dug down into the earth over a long time by moving the land away one piece at a time.

Did you know that the Grand Canyon was originally a flat ground? How do you think did Grand Canyon became like this? Is it possible that water can move the land away one piece at a time? B. Explore 1. Presentation

2. Pre-activity

The teacher will present a video showing the effects of soil erosion. Students should listen comprehensively. Video link: https://youtu.be/0modscIbcd4 ➢ The teacher will divide the class in groups of 3. Let them pick their group leader, secretary, and reporter. ➢ Instruct the leaders to get the materials and worksheet to be used in the experiment. ➢ Let the students be reminded of the standards in performing group activity.

3. Activity Proper C. Explain 1. Group Reporting

2. Discussion

Let the learners perform an experiment on soil erosion with their respective group. Then, answer the guide questions. (*See attached worksheet) After all groups have done answering the worksheets, ask the leader and the reporter from each group to share their work, observation, and answers in front of the class. How can water change the shape of the land? ➢ Water can carry tiny pieces of the Earth’s surface downstream, like how the Grand Canyon was formed by the flowing water of the Colorado River. How can water move pieces of the land far away? ➢ Through the processes of weathering and erosion. Weathering is the process by which moving water breaks down soil, rock and minerals, and erosion is the process by which the flowing water transports soil and rock from one spot and deposits it elsewhere. What else can move land? ➢ Wind, people, and animals What are some examples of erosion? ➢ Wind breaking down rocks and carrying the particles away is an example of erosion. You can also see how over time a river carries soil downstream and makes rocks in the river smoother. What can help to reduce or stop water erosion? ➢ Natural and manmade objects can block the water from eroding soil. Humans can plant grass or add mulch and stones on top of soil to keep it from moving away. What can help to reduce or stop wind erosion? ➢ You could plant trees to slow down the wind. You could also add plants like grass, whose roots will keep the soil in the ground. Can anything slow down the movement of the land? ➢ Increasing the amount of vegetative cover (from grass, plants, and trees, for example) on the ground is the most effective way to slow down the movement of the land.

D. Elaborate 1. Generalization 2. Application

Make a reflection on the effects of soil erosion. Write at least 3-5 sentences. What are the signs of erosion that you have observed around your community or in other places?

E. Evaluate

IV. ASSIGNMENT

Read the statements carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer. 1) Which of the following statement is NOT true about soil erosion? a) It is a natural phenomenon. b) It impacts both living and nonliving things. c) It affects the environment. d) It does not shape the landforms of the Earth. 2) These are human activities which worsen the effects of soil erosion in the environment except: a) Overgrazing b) Quarrying c) Reforestation d) Illegal logging 3) When is soil erosion beneficial to humans and animals? a) There is shaping and formation of soil. b) There is clogging of irrigation canals. c) There is change in appearance of mountains. d) There are damages of slopes of mountains. 4) Which of the following is the effect of soil erosion to humans and animals? a) Put to risk due to landslides. b) Pollution of water. c) Loss of lives and shelter. d) All of the above 5) As a Grade 5 student, what simple activity can you do to prevent soil erosion? a) I will join some environmental advocacies. b) I will tell authorities to stop mining in our place. c) I will join in tree planting activities in school. d) I will stop the illegal logging activities. Plan your own model to show one way of minimizing the harmful effects of soil erosion.

Learner’s Worksheet MATERIALS:

• • • • 1)

PROCEDURE:

2) 3) 4) QUESTIONS:

1. 2. 3.

Clear containers (shoe box size) Sand or soil (about the size of an adult fist per student group) Cups of water (100-150 ml per student group) Put one fistful of sand or soil on one side the container. Brainstorm how you could move some of the sand or soil from one side of the container to the other side using only water. Angle each container by propping one side up with a textbook so the water can flow downhill and across the container. Get small containers of water. Pour the water over the sand or soil. How does flowing water move pieces of the land? What would happen if we kept pouring water? How could we slow down erosion caused by moving water?
