Letter from Birmingham Jail Notes The purpose of this letter was to tell everyone about the segregation in the South against the African Americans. MLK was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference 4 basic steps in any non-violent campaign o collection of facts to determine whether injustices are alive o negotiation o self-purification o direct action Birmingham- most segregated city in US There was an opportunity to negotiate and promises were made to remove the humiliating racial signs from the stores but the promises were broken Process of self-purification began: o Workshops on nonviolence Law just or unjust o Just law: a man-made code that squares with the moral law, or law of God o Unjust law: code that is out of harmony with the moral law Any law that degrades human personality MLK did not have any attention is creating a commotion, but he really wanted to get his point across about segregation In this letter you can see the courage and strength MLK had, if I were in this situation I would definetly not have the courage to do what MLK tried to do My only question, what is the purpose of segregation? Why would people want to do that? If we treated each other equally then we could live peacefully?...
