Drugged, Hospitalized, and Shipped Away Avery: Hi there! Thank you for tuning into today’s podcast. I am joined with the beautiful, strong, and intelligent Rita Morano. Rita: Hi, thank you so much for having me. Avery: Of course! So Rita and I have known each other since freshman year. We got really close and learned a lot about each other, so I thought that it may be beneficial for this interview. I know that this can get very personal, but Rita and I have shared just about everything with each other, so this will likely not be too difficult. Rita: Yes, of course! Let’s get started. Avery: Okay, so my first question is… What’s a struggle that you have gone through in your life that has impacted your personal life story? Rita: Well, this is heavy, but it’s a big part of who I am today. It happened recently… I was traveling this past summer with my then boyfriend and his family. We went to the beach, where some of his college friends lived. I was really excited to go. I should also mention that my boyfriend and I had been together for about a year and a half at this point. One night, Jack, my boyfriend, wanted to go visit his college friends who had a house along the beach. I remember it vividly. I remember telling Jack that I didn’t want to go… I’m a very socially anxious person, and I did not know the college friends that Jack had. Jack really wanted to see them though, so I

He also told me we would only go for a little bit, so I was down to stop by for an hour or so. When we got there, Jack’s friends had edibles. They had obviously already taken some on their own. Jack seemed totally fine with this, but I felt so  uncomfortable. It’s also probably important to note that I do not do drugs or go to parties, like, ever. I just stood there while I met them while Jack was catching up with these guys. They were obviously high. Avery: What were the names of the guys? Did Jack know them from high school? Rita: I think one was Drew and the other was Matt, and no, Jack definitely didn’t know them from high school. That was another red flag because Jack and I had graduated from the same school, so I would’ve trusted someone that went to our high school. Avery: Okay, got it. You can continue. Rita: I think that after that, Jack disappeared into a room with the guys. I know he only took an edible, but still. He was obviously hiding it from me while I talked to some girl. When he came back, he was trying to convince me to take one. I obliged… Mainly because I was tired of him nagging me to try one. I never do drugs, but Jack and his friends convinced me that it wasn’t even bad or strong. I only had one, but it reacted awfully. I think it had something to do with the medication that I take. I was so scared… I ended up shattering a window, getting the glass stuck in my hand, and Jack and his friends had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital to get stitches. Jack came to the hospital, but only to tell me that I should “probably go home.” I asked

I ended up flying home by myself and going to see my parents. It was hands down the worst experience, but the best learning experience, and the biggest deterrent from drugs.

 imagine going through this. How did this Avery: I’m so sorry this happened to you. I cannot  make you feel? Rita: Well, in the moment, I was really hurt and surprised. I did not expect Jack to be so cruel, making me go home alone. I also did not expect to have had such a negative reaction to the drugs. Avery: I’m sure. You must have felt so scared. I could never   even fathom feeling that way. Where were you again when this took place? Rita: I was in Florida, super far away from my home in Texas. It wasn’t like I could just drive home, or call my mom to come get me… I just felt really alone, really betrayed by Jack, scared from taking the edible, and I just couldn’t understand why this had to happen to me. Like, I obviously made a mistake, but I was still so shaken up over it all. Avery: I’m sure! I am so sorry that you had to go through this. Do you mind if I ask you a few other questions? Rita: No, not at all. Go ahead.

Avery Foster Interpersonal Communication 030 Word Count: 1104 Avery: What was the biggest lesson you learned and how did it impact your life story? Rita: I think that the biggest thing I learned was that drugs are not ever   a good idea. I never expected to be the kind of person who gave into doing drugs… But I think if there’s one takeaway, it is that you never know the reaction that drugs can have on a specific person… I definitely had no idea. Also, another lesson I learned was that you can’t even trust your boyfriend sometimes, but mainly, don’t do drugs. I honestly just feel lucky to be alive, lucky that nothing further happened beyond me getting stitches. Avery: That’s definitely an important lesson to learn! I’m so sorry that you had to go through this, but I agree that it must have been the biggest deterrent from drugs and a huge life lesson, even though it was hard. Rita: Definitely. Avery: My hope is that whoever hears or reads your story will understand the consequences of drug use. Rita: Honestly, me too. That’s all that I can hope to come from this. Avery: Well, thank you so much for allowing me to interview you, Rita. You are so amazing and strong. Rita: Thank you! And thank you so much for having me.

Avery Foster Interpersonal Communication 030 Word Count: 1104 Avery: Of course. And to anyone reading this, just remember how close to death you can get when it comes to drugs, if not actual death. This is an important lesson to keep in mind, no matter how hard it may feel to say no....
