• The seasonal workers' buildingat Diellikon, near Z urich, marks a remarkablepoint in thc c areerof Livio Vacchini and indeed ofSwiss architecture as a whole, 1hough more especially, of rcccnt Ticinese architecture. Accustomed as we are to 1he knowledgeable virtuosity, semantic redundancy and cerebral historicism of the bes t products of one o f a rchitecture's most important provinces, the a scetic rigour o f this hostel would seem to foil any attempt to !abel it as simply belonging t o a socalled cTicinese school •. The common rootsoflhese arcltitects are too apparent for us no t to recognize, in between these forking paths, analogies, references and a ldndofcultural solidarity which would be hard todetect in similar situations. Only thus c an the subtle link, forexample, between the ceaseless experimentalism of Bolla and thecontinually changing constructional media adopted by Vacchini be explained: Swi tching from tubular to sectioned iron, to prefabricated conc rete, wood and threedimensional structures, hc displays an interest no t so much in the materia! as such, as in the possibilities of d esigning with light, and always in different ways. Even his reliance o n history as a standard instead ofas a model that appears, with sophisticated declensions and intellectuaJizing ioteriorization in Reichlin and Reinhart, crops up con tinually in Vacchini, almost in theshape of clearned ignorance•. Otherthreadsandcomplicities couJd be discerned; it is howeve r more appropriate IO s tress the factthat, in this particularcultural climate, the architect'scraft is always practised with the humility of Jeamingwhileworking. with a Jimpid a u ention to an exemplary respect forother people's work. A t Dietlikon, Vacchini has thus succeeded in constructinga building : . l. . セNAL@ _ .•. _ , Mセ which is al s o a su m of his idea of 1 architecture.
