WELCOME TO LAW AT DUNDEE

Law at Dundee is part of the wider School of Social Sciences. The Programme Lead for Law is the Head of Law, Dr Sarah Hendry. The School of Social Sciences is led by the Dean, Professor Nick Fyfe. As you embark on your first year of studying Law within this School, you will be faced with a barrage of new experiences and information. Adjusting to life at University is a challenge in itself, quite apart from adjusting to new methods of teaching and learning and to a new subject to study. Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed at first – everybody does. Don’t worry if you feel that you’ve not got things right straight away – nobody does. What counts is your ability to learn and improve. Commitment and effort are required if you are going to find success, not just in your academic studies but in the many other elements that make up a successful time at University. It is meeting the challenge of developing and improving that makes your time at University so exciting. The University uses a web-based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) system known as MyDundee as the main way we will provide you with information on modules and general study issues. Information relevant across the School of Social Sciences (such as attendance and engagement requirements) are under the heading School Guidelines, whilst more specific information for Law is also available. When you login to MyDundee be sure to look carefully at all the information available to you, both for Law and for the School of Social Sciences. You will find not only this Handbook but allocations to tutorial groups and guidance on a whole range of important issues such as submission of assessed work and how to organise your studies through to careers. While we cannot answer your every query this Handbook, the School Guidelines and the Law pages aim to provide you with information on how the School works and what is expected of you as a student and what you can expect of us. While there is too much information here and on MyDundee for you to take in at once do remember that the information is always available for you to consult. As the year progresses, check the sources of information available to you. You may be surprised to find simple answers to many of the things which seem confusing or unclear, as well as useful guidance to help you with your studies.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/21 – STATEMENT BY THE UNIVERSITY

The University of Dundee is dedicated to providing you with high quality tuition and the best student experience. The Academic Year 2020/21 presents all of us within our community and in society unprecedented challenges due to the impact of COVID-19 and the consequent health and safety restrictions. During this time, we will do everything to ensure there is a safe environment for our staff and students. We are introducing various measures to ensure safe teaching methods and accommodation while at the same time providing high quality teaching, opportunity for safe social interaction, and access to healthcare. Information Commitment In this time of high uncertainty, the University wishes to ensure that: - prospective students can access the information they need to make the choices that are best for them; - all students understand what they can expect in terms of teaching and support available; and - students have access to clear, accurate and timely information. This includes information on course content, structure and the impact of COVID-19 on that. There are important terms that we wish to bring to your attention as they may have a direct impact on you and your course so that we can work with you to bring you the best experience in these turbulent circumstances. Course information All courses will continue to conform to the University of Dundee Quality and Academic Standards which can be found here: https://www.dundee.ac.uk/qf/quality-and-academicstandards/ Due to the impact of COVID-19 we may not be able to deliver the course as previously advertised; or if you are a returning student, what you experienced previously. For specific details on how your course is affected (if at all), your School will be in contact with you directly. If you have any specific queries, please contact your relevant School office. General Quality Assurance Commitment Where changes are made to courses and modules this will be done in a manner that continues to support your achievement of the agreed Learning Outcomes. Our programmes will continue to meet the requirements outlined by both the UK Quality Code and our own policies to ensure the quality and academic standards of our courses and your qualifications are maintained and there is continued alignment with subject benchmarks and Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body requirements. Optional modules Please note that while core modules for your course will be maintained, optional modules may be subject to change and not be available this year.

Teaching Delivery

6

Whilst the composition of your course is unlikely to change to a material extent how it will be delivered may be subject to change. We plan to offer courses wherever possible in a blended mixture of online and face-to-face teaching, to allow for the greatest flexibility in student learning depending on what public health guidelines are in place. As government advice allows, we will increase the level of face-to-face teaching, as quickly and as far as possible. The balance between the various elements, such as the number and type of contact hours that you can expect (for example, lectures, seminars, work placements, feedback on assignments), the expected workload (for example the expected self-study time) could be subject to change depending on external factors such as government restrictions on social distancing. Methods of Assessment/Placements The overall method(s) of assessment for your course, for example by exams, coursework or practical assessments, etc (or a combination of these) may be subject to change. For example, there may be limitations placed on the University in placing you with another organisation for work placements, practical assessments or electives. We will offer as much as possible of our small group teaching, plus practical, studio, clinical skills and laboratory teaching, in a face-to-face format with appropriate social distancing in place. This will be heavily dependent on individual subjects/disciplines and programme structure, and your School will provide more information about this during the summer. Location of study The physical location of study or possible locations could be subject to change. There may be restrictions placed on the University in terms of access to school spaces, laboratories, libraries, studios, lecture theatres and other teaching spaces on campus. Contingency for Lockdown Whilst the University is making every effort to welcome you back to campus, in the event of another lockdown situation the University has capacity to continue to provide teaching and learning and other support services through its on-line infrastructure. Keep Up to Date/Further Information You can keep up to date with how the University is managing its response to COVID-19 on the University’s website at https://www.dundee.ac.uk/coronavirus. Also, please refer to the University’s terms and conditions which can be found here https://www.dundee.ac.uk/governance/policies/studenttermsandconditions/ SCHOOL EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

As a University, one of our core values is to treat everyone with equal respect, valuing their contribution to the University. With this key value in mind, as a School we are working hard to 7

ensure that matters of equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) are at the centre of everything we do, and we have a dedicated ED&I committee focused on this. The School is committed to enabling all students to achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment. As a School we will continuously strive to:     

Develop an awareness of ED&I issues amongst all students and staff Encourage the promotion of equality and celebration of diversity in all aspects of School life Ensure that all members of the School community are valued equally Eliminate discriminatory practices, ensuring equitable treatment within the School and responding promptly to any concerns regarding inequitable treatment Eliminate all forms of harassment and victimisation

If you have any ED&I related matters to raise, please feel free to do so with any member of staff, the administrative team (Fi Clark - [email protected]) or the student representatives. If you wish to speak to a member of the ED&I committee there are staff representatives in all disciplines (see School MyDundee page for an up to date list) or you can contact the School Co-ordinator, Dr Sarah Halliday ([email protected]).

GENERAL INFORMATION MYDUNDEE

The University uses a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) system known as MyDundee (sometimes also referred to as Blackboard). This is web-based and can be accessed on or off campus, using your standard log-in details. This is where you will find vitally important information about your studies. The School uses MyDundee extensively and every module you are studying has a module site on MyDundee. As well as basic details about the staff teaching the module and the general teaching arrangements involved, all of the teaching materials used on the module will appear on MyDundee, as well as links to the online Resoure Lists and the submission point for assessments. There are many other facilities in MyDundee and these will be used in a variety of ways in different modules. There are a number of ways to access MyDundee. A link appears on the main desktop which appears when you login on campus. There is important information in both the Social Sciences and the Law areas of MyDundee where you will find all the general information you may need during the course of your studies, the LL.B. Handbook, and important information on issues such as plagiarism and late submission of work. The Social Sciences area is found in “Organisations”. Modules you are taking are listed separately. Returning students will notice that it is new version of MyDundee that is being used this year so that it will look a bit different. This version is updated every month so that some features may change during the year. There are also likely to be adjustments during the year in how we use MyDundee in response to the experience and preferences of staff and students as we rely more heavily on on-line delivery of material. eVision Important information will also be made available to you through eVision, including your personalised timetable and assessment results.

LOCATION AND BUILDINGS

The School Office and all staff offices are in the Scrymgeour Building, which is normally open during the working day (c.08.30 - 18.30) Monday-Friday. Some parts of the University, including the Library, are accessible only through a “card-swipe” or similar system using your matriculation card and you should ensure that you have it with you on campus. During the 2020/21 session there will be further restrictions on access to and movement within buildings in line with social distancing requirements.

The School Reception is situated on the ground floor of the Scrymgeour Building and is open between the hours of 08.45 and 17.00. The staff at Reception will be able to direct you to the appropriate person if they cannot deal with your query directly. Contacting Staff Individual staff can be contacted at class, in their offices or by e-mail, either to discuss matters or arrange an appointment. Normally all staff have a weekly “office hour” displayed by their office door when they will be available in the Scrymgeour Building but are usually available at other times as well. It is good practice to e-mail first to confirm an ...
