Popular local author – Humayun Ahmed Being popular is not a cake walk, it requires extraordinary talent and dedication to gain popularity. When I first discovered about the immense popularity of Humayun Ahmed's novels, he quickly became my favorite. He was a Bangladeshi novelist, dramatist, screenwriter, filmmaker, songwriter, scholar, and lecturer in addition to being a poet. After I came to know about his popularity I quickly discovered a lot about his early and personal life, his notable works and contributions and his controversies.

A great author and human being like Humayun Ahmed had a very interesting personal life and background. Humayun Ahmed was born in 13th November 1948 in Netrokona and was the son of a police officer. Ahmed had a dark brown skin tone and his physique was chubby and had an average height of 5’6. He was a very well learned person, he had completed his SSC from Bogura and HSC from Dhaka College, and he also completed his bachelors and master’s degree from Dhaka University in chemistry and had gained PHD from North Dakota University. Ahmed was married twice first with Gultekin Khan with whom he had three children and then he married Maher Afroz Shaon with whom he has two more children.

Humayun Ahmed was a famous writer among teenagers and adults. He was also a famous novelist, dramatist, songwriter. He gained recognition with his famous debut novel “Nondito Noroke” published in 1972. As a novelist, he wrote over 200 novels which are both fiction and non-fiction. As a scholar, he wrote his writings with intellection and wisely chose his words of writing to connect with the readers. “Shongkhonil Karagar”, “Himu”, “Misir Ali” are some of his best notable works which make him one of the bestsellers in Bangladesh. With his tremendous mind of film-making, he created drama like “Aaj Robibar”, “Kothao Keo Nei”, and many more. His composition of around forty songs pushed him one step closer to nirvana, such as “Lila Bali”, “Jodi Mon Kade”, “O Amar Ural Ponkhi re”, and

many more. With all his notable works and contributions, he is one of those to hold a pillar for Bangladeshi Literature.

Besides being the most enduring storyteller, Humayun Ahmed’s life was also full of controversies. The most controversial event of his life happened in 2012. One of his novels called “Deyal” was published in a newspaper and after three days of publishing, the attorney general of the country caught him because of having the hint of killing the prime minister’s brother in his writing. He also went through controversy in 2004 when he married his second wife after giving a divorce to his first wife in 2003. He also went through controversies after every publication of his writings. Some appreciated him as the master of writing while others thought he was not much of a good writer. Though, his contribution to Bengali literature will be remembered even after thousand years.

There is hardly any aspect of life which has not been thoroughly explored by Humayun Ahmed in his books. Humayun Ahmed has enriched our understanding of life and made us better equipped to deal with the daily problems of life. He used to hold a mirror to life in which we can virtually glimpse on past, present and future. He was perfect author to many readers of this country. Readers from different countries were captivated by his work and made him feel that he did not only belonged to Bangladesh but to the entire world. They learned many things from him and looks upon him and his work as a constant guide to the future....
