Looking For Work...

Description

ENG 151 17 March 2016 “Looking For Work” Have you ever wanted to live the perfect life where you were rich, have a mansion, and a loving traditional family, like in the television shows, well in Gary’s Soto’s “Looking for Work” that is exactly how he would want his family to live. I n the story Soto, a young Hispanic child wishes he could live a happy and luxurious life. Soto tells us in the story how may be living a rich society would probably make his life much easier and happier. In Gary Soto “Looking for Work” tells a story about himself as a nine year old Hispanic child who wants his family to be more like traditional American family that he sees on television. He wants his parents his parents to be loving and caring, kids listening to their parents and the family lives in a nice mansion, but in reality this is not his life. Money is the most important part to create his perfect family, so in Soto’s mind he thought he have to be wealthy to live in a better life. In order to make money Soto has to make work. Gary Soto lives in an ordinary block where most of the working class people live. Where Gary is looking for work he went to the corner house in his block to clean the leaves, the lady said it, it is summer time and there are no leaves, she said it do you see any leaves, he looked at that way, and there were no leaves, but still she got work for him. She wants him to get a bottle of coke from the liquor store, as he mentions in the story that the lady was old, so we can assume that why the lady wants him to get a bottle Of coke from the liquor store, instead of getting a bottle of coke he gets her a bottle of Pepsi, and the lady thanked him and gave him a nickel from her apron. Gary Soto who have desired to live a luxurious life, continues his journey and find a another house to make some money, so he crossed the street of the next block, where a retarded man lives and he let Soto entered in his

garden and cut the long grass. The man wants Soto to find long deep roots, and cut them in halves meaning make it shorter. At the end Soto gets a quarter and a two peaches from his tree, which he ate it latter on the alley behind his house. Gary Soto who to loves to watching television, where he sees a scene from the show where the family having a dinner the father wears a suit and the mother who is dressed up and where a necklace in her neck. After watching the scene on television, Soto wants his family to be the like the family he watched it on the show. He saw people in the show happy as they ate their Dinner, and wanted his family to have the same feeling. He thought white people would appreciate Hispanics more. If you compare his family to that of the family he says on television, his family is totally different. He grew up in a different family that of another child who grows up in a regular traditional family. However, in “Looking for Work” Gary Soto wanted to try and be like the families of the television show that he always watched. He even tried to convince his family to have a turtle soup, a few days before he watched a television program in which Polynesian tribe killed a turtle, Soto mother looked at him, confused. Soto mother said to him are you crazy, where did you get the idea, he said it that he watches a program on television, after that he took a next step. Mother do you think we should get dressed up for dinner, where her mother laughed and collecting dishes and his brother making picture in the bean sauce, giggling he said it was me but he does not care, because he still wants an answer, as we all know this is the summer time and most of the morning Soto spent in front of television that showed the rich and luxurious life of white kids. Soto asked her mother again, but she laughed, after the dinner where in the television white kids having a desert in dishes at the table, my mother sent me outside where my brother and sister were sitting. They were talking about me obviously what I asked my mother was weird

because we usually do not do this thing on the dinner table. They were kind of angry when I asked my mother to get dressed up on the dinner table. In this essay I would like to right a story of a poor girl named Kimberly. The story is written by Jean Kwok, Girl in Translation. In the story Kimberly who came with her mother to United States of America. She is Chinese and migrated from china to get a better life and future for her mother and herself. She started to go to school where as she does not know how to speak English, but she tries to go to school, her schooling was not going good plus the teacher was not that good, but there are some teachers who like their students to get better grades and can achieved their goals what they dreamed of. Kimberly who was intelligent an famous author who see a lot consequences in his life. Kimberly work hard because her father died and her mother was the only relationship she got, her mother used to work in sweat shop which is really hard to do it, but still she was doing for her one and only child. Even though the teachers were not that good, but because of her mother she got success in her life. In my opinion I can see what Soto think about being live like a rich person, lives in a mansion and having a great and wonderful life. The dream he sees which is really hard to get in Real life, but may be one day he succeeds and his dream come true. The dream of every kid at the age of nine, a colored kid who just wants to be like white people Soto was not different than the others he was a simple kid who likes to swim, spent his money on himself and who having a dream of living in a big house with his family. From the story we can imply that the nine year old boy who only wants his family to be perfect family, so that people will like him better. Soto lives in a nice working class

neighborhood. He goes outside and does unusual jobs for his neighbors. We can assume that he seems to be kind, loving person and loves his family....
