PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action may potentiate the effects of GABA, depress the CNS, and suppress the spread of seizure activity
Therapeutic Use treatment of anxiety, insomnia, status epilepticus, or sleep difficulty.
Complications drowsiness, dizziness, loss of coordination, headache, nausea, blurred vision, change in sexual interest/ability, constipation, heartburn, or change in appetite may occur
Medication Administration P.O. onset 1 hour, peak 2 hour, duration 12-24 hr I.V. onset 5 min, peak 60-90 min, duration 6-8 hours I.M. 15-30 min onset, 60-90 min peak, 6-8 hour duration
Contraindications/Precautions -Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, glaucoma, lung/breathing problems (such as sleep apnea), mental/mood disorders -This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby.
Interactions - DO NOT use with sedative hypnotics; alcohol/ sodium oxybate - Should not be taken with Benzodiazepines/opiods. -may cause slow or difficulty breathing, sedation, and death. -Used with clozapine may cause delirium, sedation, sialorrhea, and ataxia
Nursing Interventions Advise patient to decrease lorazepam dose gradually to minimize withdrawal symptoms; abrupt withdrawal may cause tremors, nausea, vomiting, and abdomi- nal and muscle cramps. Teach other methods to decrease anxiety, such as increased exercise, support groups, relaxation techniques.
