Book review assignment - Lord of the Fireflies...

Description

Lord of the fireflies

William Golding

A dozen English boys end up on an island after a plane crashed without adult survivors. The boys are between seven to twelve years old. At the beginning of the novel, everything seems to be under control, until the fear of the monster begins to take its grip on the boys, first on the younger ones but later as time goes by, the fear evokes in the elder ones as well. The horror of the monster that actually exists only in their imagination starts to wickedness as well as the fear rising in their hearts.

Instead of presenting characters to the reader, the author has let the boys introduce themselves to each other when they find each other after the accident. Then you also find out what they think about each other and people become more alive.

The main characters in the book are opposites to each other. Ralph is the one who wants it organized with the rules that it is in a civilization. He is the most sensible of them. He wants to do important things like building huts and making fire. While Jack wants anarchy and live like a savage. Jack is a person who wants to decide everything. It is difficult for him to accept someone else deciding about him. At the beginning of the book meets Ralph Piglet who are overweight, have asthma and wears glasses.

Piglet is the smartest on the island. He arranges meetings and decides that those who want the word to the group will hold a seashell. Piglet who previously had no real friend is trying to do Ralf to his friend but Ralf does not care so much about Piglet. Piglet was totally boring, his obesity, his asthma and his platitudinous ideas were dull, but you could always get a little fun of running with him, even if you did it by mistake. Piglet saw his smile and interpreted it incorrectly as a kindness. Piglet gets bullied because of him wearing glasses and having asthma. And Ralf is also disliked because he and Piglet merge and become real friends later in the book.

William Golding has succeeded wonderfully well by describing the detailed environment, ranging from the beautiful tropical views from up in the hills to down at the lagoon. His way of describing the environment is something very unique that many writers do not succeed in

such a clear and comprehensive manner and incredibly metaphorical way. When you read, it's like you see the environment as a picture in front of you. He has succeeded incredibly well with the environment among the various characters as well. First, the happy feeling of free in the beginning when everyone is happy, but through his slowly stamping and as he puts the book in gloom, evil and unrest. The author really wants to seize the reader feels, something he have accomplished very fine as well.

It can be very hard and confusing to keep up and understand the storyline as it goes on. I think that is the only thing that William Golding has managed a little worse with, but still managed. It will often make the reader understand the characters' thoughts and how those specific characters experiences of the different situations they go through as well as what’s going on at that moment. It is very fast shifting between the characters thoughts which sometimes make it feel a little chaotic....
