Description

Lymphoma Activity For this activity we will be using the American cancer society website starting at the following link: cancer.org/cancer/lymphoma.html 1. Review your notes on Intro to the Lymphatic System and Lymphatic Drainage System lecture. Answer the following questions from these notes: a. What are the components of the lymphatic drainage system? The components include lymphs, lymphatic vessels, and lymphatic organs that contain lymphoid tissues.

b. What are the three lymphocyte types? What are their basic functions? B lymphocytes make antibodies that help your body fight infections T lymphocytes attack foreign cells, cancer cells, and cells infected with viruses Natural killer cells contain substances that can kill tumor cells or cells infected with viruses. i. What are the two types of T lymphocytes (cells)? What are the functions of each? Cytotoxic T cells directly kill infected host cells, activating other immune cells, producing cytokines Helper T cell help other cells of the immune system and are important in adaptive immunity and activate B cells and cytotoxic cells.

c. What is found in the cortex of a lymph node? The outer layer contains B cell areas, or follicles. The middle layer is mostly populated by T cells and dendritic cells.

d. What is found in the medulla of a lymph node? It contains large blood vessels, sinuses, and the medullary cords.

e. What cell types are found in subcapsular space? The sub capsular sinus is lined by a layer of endothelial cells. Beneath the endothelial cells are microphages that retrieve antigen from the lymph in the subcapsular sinus.

f. What cell types are found in germinal centers? Long-lived antibody secreting plasma cells and memory B cells

g. What cell types are found in medullary sinuses? Reticular cells and histocytes

h. What cell types are found in medullary cords? The medullary cords contain antibody-secreting plasma cells, B cells and macrophages.

2. What is lymphoma? Lymphoma is a cancer that starts in cells that are part of the body’s immune system.

3. Click the link for “Hodgkin Lymphoma”. Then click the link “About Hodgkin Lymphoma”. Then click the link “What is Hodgkin Lymphoma?” Answer the following questions: a. Hodgkin lymphoma usually starts in white blood cells called lynmphocytes.

b. Which of the following Hodgkin lymphoma types is the most common? i. Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (cHL) or Nodular Lymphocyte-Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma

c. What are the cancer cells in cHL called? These cells are an abnormal type of what kind of cell? Reed-Sternburg cells and are an abnormal type of B lymphocytes.

4. Go back to the Hodgkin Lymphoma page and click the link titled “Key Statistics for Hodgkin Lymphoma”. Answer the following questions: a. What is the 5 year survival rate for all patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma? It is now about 87%.

5. Go back 2 pages to the Hodgkin Lymphoma page. Click the link titled “Causes, Risk factors, and Prevention”. Then click the link titled “Hodgkin Lymphoma Risk Factors”. Answer the following questions: a. What is a risk factor? A risk factor is anything that affects your chance of getting a disease such as cancer.

b. What are the 5 risk factors are listed that increase the likelihood that someone will develop Hodgkin lymphoma? Epstein-Barr virus infection/mononucleosis, Age, Gender, Family History, Weakened Immune System

6. Go back 2 pages to the Lymphoma page and click the link titled “Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma”. Click on the link titled “About Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma”. Then click the link titled “What is Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?” Answer the following questions: a. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma can occur in what two cell types? B-cell and T cell lymphocytes i. In which of the two cell types does it occur most often? B-cell lymphocytes

b. Describe Indolent lymphomas. Indolent lymphomas grow and spread slowly. Some indolent lymphomas might not need to be treated right away, but can be watched closely instead. The most common type of indolent lymphoma in the united states is follicular lymphoma.

c. Describe aggressive lymphomas. Aggressive lymphomas grow and spread quickly, and usually need to be treated right away. The most common type of aggressive lymphoma in the united states is diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) 7. Go back 1 page to the “About Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma” page. Click the link titled “Key Statistics for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma”. a. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma accounts for 4% of all cancers in the US.

b. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is more common in men / women. (Circle the correct answer)...
