A single story is a one-dimensional, narrow-minded viewpoint of a person, group, or culture. An example of a single story is something as simple as that guy is weird. A single is created by things like limited access to information, ignorance or not researching the other side of the story. Sometimes people just don’t to take the effort to do a little research to expand or change their idea of something or someone. There are several consequences of a single story. It can create a warped viewpoint of something or someone. For example, people may only experience very limited amounts of another country’s culture, like Japan. They may think they only watch anime and eat sushi. In reality, Japan has an expansive culture with many more components to it. Sticking to a single story simplifies, restricts, and possibly dehumanizes, people and culture. The speaker, novelist Chimamanda Adichie, said that we “need to engage in all stories of a place or person.” I think that is a possible thing that we all should be doing. By looking into another sides of story, researching about a culture or race, or by interacting with these people, we can break those single stories and create a better understanding of others around us. It’s not that hard to do, it just takes a little time to go from only a single story to understanding multiple stories to better recognize others....
