“Let the world change”

Everything changes. There is nothing in the universe that can be exonerated from change or transformation. Kate Winslet said, “The good and bad things are what form us as people... change makes us grow.” The history of our world is full of evolution, so it is not a strange thing that everything we feel or think changes as well. Our society has transform itself too. We are not sure if it has changed to be better or worse, but the fact is that it has been transform. Humankind is one of the most interesting topics that there is. Humans are complex and simple at the same time. Society has a very clear vision of the difference between good and bad. Of course, we all need to acknowledge that each person has its own point of view about different topics or situations. Humans have the necessity of questioning everything because that is the only way to grow and become better people. The contrast between the 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, an adaptation of Charles Perrault's fairy tale "The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood", and the 2014 live-action movie Maleficent, is an extraordinary example of how society has transform itself into being open minded, able to explore different points of view, and understand the true meaning of good and bad.

Society has become open minded. Open-mindedness involves a readiness to give due consideration to relevant evidence and argument, especially when factors present in the situation tempt one to resist such consideration, with a view to increasing our awareness, understanding and appreciation, avoiding error, and reaching true and defensible conclusions. Society is looking past behind what we can see at first sight, for example, the movie Maleficent provides a revisionist version of the fairy tale by concentrating on the backstory of the sinful character. The movie “Maleficent” can be seen as the story of feminism rising from its ashes of vengeance, reclaiming its savagely lacerated off wings, and flying to the sun. We can clearly see how the movie describes the story of a woman going through feminist paces – first beauty, then innocence, then affection leading to the death of power, disbelief, anger, revenge, rage, withdrawal, sadness, self-awareness, inner peace, the battle for the self and finally victory.

As times change, people start to understand that points of view are relative, so each person has its own. Now days, after opening our eyes and learning that there are two sides of every story, we must accept that it seems that we have gotten the story all wrong. In Maleficent, we get a different side of the story, as told from Maleficent's point of view. The Movie “Maleficent” tells the fairy tale from the wicked one's perspective. The movie’s final narration prompts us to comprehend that Maleficent is equally hero and villain. The 1959 Walt Disney Sleeping Beauty captured Maleficent as a horned witch who could transform into a dragon and wants to be the ruler of the kingdom, and this is a different point of view. We can appreciate how in the 2014 version, Maleficent has human reactions and feelings. Someone does something immoral to her, so she is angry and wants retaliation, but she feels love for Aurora and has, as most human beings, countless weaknesses.

Thanks to the changes that we have managed to create, society understands the true meaning of good and bad. When something is moral, we say that an act is good or bad. We also may say that the person is good or bad, although this indicates that a person who does one bad thing has eternally bad intent and will always do immoral things, and vice versa. This makes good and bad uniquely human. It is a dangerous over-simplification to believe that some people are distinctively ‘good’ while others are innately ‘evil’ or ‘bad.’ Human nature is infinitely more intricate than this, of course. In human beings, ‘good’ and ‘evil’ are fluid. People can be a combination of ‘virtuous’ and ‘corrupt’ qualities. Maleficent focuses on the iconic villain’s side of the story. Her backstory is fleshed out for the audience, giving us a glance into her world. The director of the movie “Maleficent”, Robert Stromberg claims he was strongly drawn to the idea of having Maleficent be a strong female character. In an interview he stated, “She is a superhero in her own right, but the strength of being a female and how to stay strong yet find the softer emotional attachment, it was really an interesting conundrum.” In “Maleficent”, we see Maleficent literally taking over the strong woman role and shifting from a wicked fairy godmother, a character only actually seen in this tale, into a good fairy godmother. It is unquestionably not an overnight transformation or an easy one for Maleficent.

Change is unavoidable. The society in general is constantly changing, and even if the changes happen at a rate so microscopic, that you must sort of forecast future outcomes based on what is happening now and other social trends there are, the important thing is that we are e making the changes or transformations possible. For better or worse these changes are the result of people wanting a better life and a bright future. An astonishing example of how society has renovated itself into being open minded, able to explore different points of view, and understand the true meaning of good and bad, is the contrast between “The Sleeping Beauty” and

“Maleficent”. We should feel proud of our accomplishments and even prouder of our mistakes, because this are the ones that truly makes us change and grow as humans.
