- Very easy to dress Articulated Artists’ Figure: - Life-size figures based on the small wooden miniatures used by artists and designers - They have moveable joints - Usually made of plastic or wood - Abstractness lends itself to decorative and undressed applications as well as fully dressed and accessorized setups - Expensive - If they weren’t dressed, they wouldn’t necessarily look unfinished - Usually in high end stores - No personality, age, or ethnicity Cutout Figures: - Trendy, high style, and avant-garde • Young, fun, and sassy - Have to be pinned and tucked a lot • Clothes are pinned and draped - Don’t do a lot for the merchandise: • Not particularly popular - Silhouette cut out of wood or heavy board • True to human proportions - Not very expensive Drapers: - A shaped hanger set atop a vertical rod that is supported by a base - Recognized as a decorative prop as well as a mannequin alternative - Available in wood, metal, plastic, and assorted combinations - Making a comeback in stores: suited for being a prop and a mannequin alternative - Sculptural looking - Sometimes have a shoe platform - Much easier to store and maintain: stack easily - Generally short and sit on tables or displays - Have to pin or stuff to give it shape Hangers: - Simple alternatives to mannequins, but without taste or talent can also look like something pulled out of stock or off the rack - Hung by either invisible wire from a ceiling grid or from a hook that extends from a wall or panel - Have to make sure it looks as good as possible: • Steamed • Styled

Alternative Display Techniques: - Lay-down technique: • Very popular with social media • Anyone can do this at home • Art of the lay-down is in the folding, the pleating, the balance, and the placement of garments • Most effective when a color and theme is promoted • Used in windows, on ledges, and in cases • When used in windows, the merchandise is arranged on the floor of the window or platforms • Drape the garments over tables or furniture or have the garment look like it sitting in a chair - Pin-up technique: • Make use of a panel, wall, or vertical surface onto which a garment can be pinned, shaped, and dimensioned • Pads, tissue, and straight pins are used, not a mannequin • Must be animated and realistic in order to be effective • Very attention-getting • Uncommon because they’re difficult to execute properly - Flying technique: • Merchandise is pulled, stretched, and manipulated - Invisible fishing line or very fine piano wire • Merchandise “flies” and floats in the open window space • Very effective for tall windows • Lightweight plastic articulated figures can fly and float • Popular for individual pieces or 1 type of item floating - Activewear, denim, trending pieces, separates, etc....
