Description

African American Studies Professor Podsiadly April 6 2020 Marcus Garvey - The Black Moses The Kanopy video on the black revolutionist Marcus Mosiah Garvey enlightened me greatly on the various things he did and achieved for African Americans across the world. The way Marcus Garvey “woke” the African Americans in America intrigued me. He encouraged them to take power from the whites who oppressed them because historically Africans were first. And this is just one of many things he said that enlightened me. Throughout the video, I kept thinking why didn’t we learn about him more in school? After completing the video I could understand why we weren't taught much about him. Marcus Garvey brought inspiration to many, especially the African Americans who were oblivious of their power and history, Many African Americans didn’t know the pictures and artifacts in the museums were from their ancestors. Marcus Garvey introduced new ideas to the oppressed that they couldn't fathom. When he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1914. The main purpose of the UNIA was to teach native blacks how to gain financial independence, economic self-sufficiency and increase racial pride. White supremacists hated Garvey due to ideas he implemented in the native black communities. Even the history that’s shared in America today about Marcus Garvey; only talks about his “mail fraud” case. I believe the reason why this mail fraud case is always mentioned so that people can view Marcus garvey in a negative light. When the truth is that the mail fraud case was found to have several holes in the prosecution. This led to Marcus’s deportation back to Jamaica.

But this only increased his influence more; he continued to influence African Americans in his country to take back what was theirs and then return to Africa. I believe Garvey pushed his belief to encourage African Americans that this racist and hateful place wasn't their home. And to prove to whites everywhere that if Native blacks were to leave America, the whole system would crash eventually. Overall, the Marcus Garvey video taught me various things about his influence on native black culture and today's African American culture. The power belongs to us. We are the power that keeps everything progressing....
