Description

Mulholland's analysis of mariachi music tells us a perspective of how Mexican national identity has been constructed. Mariachi in movies and popular films has been stereotypically a group of only men dressed up in cultural uniforms playing music. This has created a narrative of a macho culture. When in reality there used to be all woman groups of mariachis, groups of men and woman as well as indigenous mariachi. Now mariachis portray an image of drinking, cowboys, overt emotionally, and fiestas which have created a staple of what mariachis should look like. In Mexico this is also the case with mariachis being dominated by all male groups creating an image of ‘false Mexico’.
