Description

About The “Cold Dorm” A Common question we are asked as recruitment chairmen is: why a cold dorm? It is no wonder, incoming freshmen desire to know what their living situation will look like, and parents wish to know where their sons will be living. The “Cold Dorm,” as it is affectionately called by the brothers in the house, is a communal style living arrangement (we are proud to say that it is the largest such space on campus). It WILL NOT be where you LIVE. As Webster’s dictionary defines it, to live—as an intransitive verb—has nine recognized meanings, moreover, to live in the sense of the cold dorm in our house holds the same meaning as storage. You will sleep and change cloths in the cold dorm, as well as interact with the other young men who are housed there. Barring those three things you will LIVE with the brothers of the house, seeking them out for mentorship, stewardship, and scholarship. The sparse conditions of the area are purposeful, as it encourages these interactions with the other brothers in the house. We as a house, hold that this interaction with the brothers is vital to a student’s success at Wabash. For instance, we will encourage you to move your desktop PC/Console and TV to a brother’s room, so that the brothers may help you stay focused while you work, or have fun while you get a killstreak in Warzone. We will facilitate study tables outside of the house to ensure that you have the best opportunity to excel here. The cold dorm is vital to the success of this, as it gives you a place free of distraction to sleep and change, while forging the connections which give our house such a strong sense of brotherhood. The Guidance, mentorship, and support offered by the fraternity is shown to, in the aggregate, improve GPAs going into a freshman’s sophomore year. While we are in no way saying that it is the only way, we believe that a cold dorm is pertinent to the success of students the campus over. But why OUR cold dorm? As I have hinted on your son will be getting three to four primary places where he will live these include: (1) The Cold Dorm; (2) The communal Freshman “Hangout” Area; (3) A Big Brother’s Room1; (4) Misc. Study Rooms/Brother’s Hangout Rooms. So while yes, you, do not have a defined space on paper that says exactly where you live, simply a general area for you do with what you please. This freedom is one that is afforded to freshmen when they join our fraternity. That is the freedom to carve out a space that is your own, a space that is just for you and your fellow freshmen, and spaces where you can enjoy the benefits of brotherhood. Perhaps this freedom is why when interviewed all current members as well as polled alumnus ranked their year in the cold dorm as one of the most memorable and enjoyable experience of their college years.
