THE CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK Isabella Santana FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 10/30/2019 Assignment 7 [email protected] GRAIN-FREE IS A KILLER, AND HERE’S WHY Purina and the FDA team up on sharing how this new trend that is a drain to both your pet’s health and your wallet NYC, New York (October 30, 2019)- A widespread fear has emerged: “Grain-free is what your dog needs! Expensive dog food is what your dog needs!” - as implied by many of the up-andcoming dog food companies in the pet industry. This is wrong, and science has proven otherwise. Purina one of the largest (and oldest) pet conglomerates uses science as a basis for guiding pet nutition is in support of recent FDA investigations and their findings. The FDA has been undergoing an investigation on Grain-Free foods being linked to Heart Disease in dogs, many of which who have shown no history of illness or risks. The common denominator in dogs affected was that they were being fed Grain-free dog kibble sold by brands such as: Acana (67 reports), Zignature (64 reports), Taste of the Wild (53 reports), Earthborn Hollistic (53 reports), among several other leading brands. These “Boutique” dog food sell grain-free as a necessity for dogs dealing with allergies, many of which assume grain is the culprit of. A filler in place of grain involves the heavy use of peas, lentils, potatoes, and other starch focused ingredients which when given consistently, raises the risks of a pet developing heart issues. Additionally, grain-free diet dog food often lacks the appropriate levels of taurine needed for dogs to maintain a healthy cardiac function. These foods often sell 4lb. bags of food anywhere from $13-23 which becomes costly when feed over a period of time. Alternatively, dogs are rarely allergic to grains. Although it may not be part of the ideal diet for every dog, pet owners have a variety of other areas to focus on to ensure their pet is receiving proper nutrition. Instead of worrying about grain, consumers should instead research and find a food that does not contain corn, wheat, or soy, which are low quality fillers used in dog foods. Additionally, focusing on the first 6 ingredients provide insight to the main make up of a food they are interested in feeding their furry friend. As stated by Dr. Venator, “Grains are actually an excellent nutrient source.” He later added that, “The reality is that true food allergies are extremely low in dogs and cats, and the offending substances usually are not grains.” #### PURINA- Nourishing Pets and Enriching Lives for over 90 years, we've been guided by the belief that pets and people are better together.
