Social Science 10 Me and My Boyish Haircut A week ago or so, Ma’am Agatha gave us an unusual homework. She gave our class to post something we don’t usually post on social media. Since we were learning about Gender and sexuality that week, she wanted the boys to post something girlish and the girls something boyish about us or something else. If I can remember well, most of us seemed shocked by this homework. Most of us felt uncomfortable but Ma’am Agatha said that after at least three days, perhaps Wednesday, we can take the photo down or remove it as a post. Then we have to see the reactions and comments of our friends and family members. For most of us, we know what we can post but for the others, it was hard considering they never posted something girlish or boyish things before or they feel uncomfortable. For me, I thought of seeing if I had any boyish pictures in my photo albums. Then I remembered that I had a picture of me with a boy cut. I hoped I would find it when I was looking through five of my photo albums. I found it in the fifth album, pictured it, and posted it on Facebook. The photo was an eight years- old me when I visited my grandparents in my dad’s province, Tadian, Mt. Province. As looked at the picture, I remembered how most of my boy cousins tease me because of the haircut. This was not the first time I had my hair cut in a boyish way. The first time was when I was five years-old and my aunts said I look cute as with my hair cut. The third time I had my hair cut in a boyish way was when during my first year in AdSI. Just before the first quarter exams started, my mom had my hair cut short again. It was quite embarrassing when I entered the classroom and the whole class laughed at my haircut. My grade 3 adviser just smiled and said that I look fine. Some of classmates thought I was a new student again because they did not recognize me. Well, there’s a reason why i had the boyish haircut which is because most of the girls on my mother’s side wore their hair like boys. Back to the homework, all the reactions were from my friends and classmates. The comments were from my relatives who have not seen me in boy cut. 51 % of my friends and relatives like my picture. One of my relatives said I look like a boy and another said I look cute. I did not receive any bad comments about the picture. Then my uncle in Canada posted a picture of two of my girl cousins in boyish haircut in his comments and they look cute. The screen caption for my photo is “#reminiscing about my younger days, What do I look like?” Back then I never did like my boyish haircut because I preferred my hairstyle now. I am a girly girl and back then I thought boyish haircuts are only for boys but most women now use boyish cuts or really short hair....
