ME 370Post-Lab 1

Lab #1: Design Thinking 1 Post-Lab Chang Hun Park Questions: 1. Was it more informative to interview the person with the simulated disability’ or to experience it yourself? Why? For me, it was more informative in experiencing the simulated disability to myself. As my fingers were strapped with rubber and try to open the jar, I still remember how it was difficult specifically. Although interviewing a person with a simulated disability also helped me to know how uncomfortable it was to open the jar without fingers, experiencing it myself gave me more impression on the uncomfortableness. 2. During this interview exercise, we asked you to pay attention to physical experiences while being mindful of emotional experiences as well. How did asking sensitive questions make you feel during this process? How did it feel to be asked questions as the person who was simulating a user with a disability? During the interview, I was asked how I felt when I struggle to open the jar. I felt that if I was an actual handicapped person it will be so depressing and mentally stressful since I can't do an easy task as I don’t have fingers to use. By putting myself in a handicapped person’s shoe, I also started to know the uncomfortableness of the jar’s structure. 3. Problem statement: write your problem statement (page 3 of your student worksheet “3 Define a problem statement”) bellow. My partner, Derick, needs a way to open the jar without using his finger because his fingers are completely sealed, and there is no handle on the jar’s lid. 4. Read the document “Lab 1: Mind Maps, Brainwriting with Post-Its, and the Ideation Scope Statement”. This document will give you more information about mind mapping individually and in groups (which you will need for your projects) and explain how to create an Ideation Scope Statement. Once you have read this document, refine and finalize your mind map and attach a picture of your mind map (with the post-its) to your post-lab submission. Make sure that everything on the mind map is legible.
