Description

MECH2400 9400: Mechanical Design 1 PCLAB Overview WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE COMING WEEKS… In PCLAB sessions and in your own time, you will be familiarising yourself with SolidWorks and understanding its features and functionality, which will not only be essential in this unit (e.g. assignments, quizzes, etc.), but will be foundational to future 3rd and 4th year units. CAD skills and proficiency (often using different packages) is typically expected in your future careers as engineers. To maximise your time, we encourage working in small groups of 2 to 3 with the aid of a tutor in your allocated sessions, since learning is most effective when in community. In your own time, research the features introduced (e.g. look up helpful videos online, discussion forums, etc.). When you do get stuck, note down any questions so you can ask your tutors in your allocated sessions. Attendance is not marked and submission of SolidWorks files to these tutorial exercises are not required, however, it is in your best interest to take up the support provided. SolidWorks CAD package is available for download and installation into your own devices – explicit instructions provided during the lecture, on CANVAS or on ED. •

To get started, simply click the SolidWorks icon on the desktop. (If it is not on your desktop please click Start > All Programs > SOLIDWORKS 2018)

SOLIDWORKS TUTORIALS SolidWorks contains a library of helpful tutorials that showcase the general and specific features of the program which can be found under ‘Help’. You can also perform keyword searches within Help. For our purposes in the PCLAB sessions, we will make use of the introductory tutorials. •

Hover your mouse over SolidWorks at the top of the window to unroll the menu bar (pin down the menu bar to stop it rolling back up using the ‘push pin’ icon).

Click the ‘Help’ tab (as shown when the menu bar is pinned).

Click the ‘SolidWorks Tutorials’ tab.

With the ‘SolidWorks Tutorials’ panel opened (pictured on the next page), click the ‘Getting Started’ tab.

You will need to first install USYD's VPN client from the download page located at; https://vpn.sydney.edu.au/ Login with your Unikey and password. 2. After the VPN client is installed, type in the "Ready to connect" pull down space, vpn.sydney.edu.au and digitise "Connect". 4. When prompted, type in your Unikey and Password and proceed to digitise "OK". Installing SolidWorks: Install SolidWorks 2018-2019 using serial Number 9710-0017-7378-4604-W3JH-8279 for all options required. For the license server location use, [email protected] Remove the old license server location [email protected] if you were using SolidWorks prior to 2019. Before attempting to run SolidWorks (from a notebook or your home PC), you must login to the VPN Client (the icon located on the bottom right of your screen).
