Explain how your topic—either the juvenile justice system or allied professionals—relates to the law enforcement branch of the criminal justice system. Include information from one of the main bullets below. Juvenile Justice:  





School resource officer – is a sworn law enforcement officer whose primary responsibility is the safety and security of the students and staff of the school to which they are assigned. School to prison pipeline – This is theory is which it is stated that high risk students (usually minorities or low-income students) who are subject to disciplinary actions more frequently than white students. Which in turn causes a higher dropout rate and ends up with them being introduced into the criminal justice system. Juvenile rights – Juveniles have similar rights to adults, such as: o being informed of their rights and of the charges against them o to be represented by an attorney o to confront their accuser and cross-examine witnesses. o to refuse to testify against themselves (Virginia rules 2021). Status offenses – Is an offense that would not be a crime if they were committed by an adult. Common examples of status offenses include underage drinking, skipping school, and violating a local curfew law.

Restorative justice – a system of criminal justice which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims and the community at large. Court process for juveniles - Juveniles generally progresses through the following steps: o Arrest o Intake o Diversion o Detention o Transfer/Waiver o Adjudication o Disposition o Aftercare



Diversion / alternatives to arrest - The purpose of diversion programs is to redirect youthful offenders from the justice system through programming, supervision, and supports. Examples include such things as: victim–offender mediation or family group conferencing, community service, treatment, or skills-building programs (including cognitive–behavioral therapy), family treatment, and drug courts (Wilson, 2021).

Juvenile parole/probation officers - The probation or parole officer organizes social case histories on the juvenile, gives his suggestions to Court and provides counseling and control. The officer must maintain a close relationship with the juveniles, their schools, families, schools, and other involved establishments. Separation from adults – The juvenile justice system is charged with keeping juveniles in separate facilities to shield them from adult offenders that will causeorl i k el ycaus e cr i mi nal behavi ori nt hem byas soci at i on.

Explain how social media relates to communication skills that are important in your topic. Juvenile Justice:  

Who uses social media? – Businesses, law enforcement, families, courts, probation, and parole agencies. For what purposes do people use social media? – A lot of information can be found regarding a juvenile using social media as they tend to use social media as a sort of journal or diary. This includes such things as their daily activities, who they associate with and their coming and goings. Business’s use social media to sell their commerce and law enforcement use it to communicate with the community.

Explain how active listening a communication skill is important in your topic. Juvenile Justice: 



Who should use active listening? – Active listening skills are very important when working with youth because they do not always know to express themselves properly. So, in short anyone who has contact with youth should be using active listening skills. Why should active listening be used? – In order to fully communicate with the youth, active listening skills need to be used to ensure that communication from both parties are fully expressed.

Explain how cultural awareness an important communication skill in your topic is. Juvenile Justice: 

Why is cultural awareness important? – Understanding where someone comes from and how they are raised is an important part of understanding why they act or react to certain situations. It is also important to be aware of cultures so as not to offend anyone in the process which will do nothing but destroy trust.
