1 **Asynchronous: Asynchronous class meetings do not require you to log in to your virtual classroom at a specified time. Students do not have to follow a strict schedule to engage in live classes or discussions, and the only requirement regarding when they turn in their work is the assignment deadline, not an arbitrary timeline. Assignment deadlines and exams days/times are maintained and included on the class syllabus. Per best practices, instructors should create non-mandatory opportunities for live interactions with and among students. 1 | Page

Fall 2021

Part 1. Course Overview Course Description This course provides a framework for understanding the opportunities and challenges impacting managers and how they conduct business. Management is about working with teams of employees to achieve organizational goals and performing the work effectively and efficiently. Successful management requires managers to master the four main functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Managing these functions is essential for achieving important organizational goals. Students will learn the skills needed to manage people in the changing demands of a global environment, emphasizing the roles and challenges of managing a diverse workforce, increasing ethical awareness and social responsiveness, developing commitments to quality and productivity, and developing decision-making and interpersonal team building skills. The course aims to increase the students' selfawareness, foster critical-thinking skills, and analyze, solve, and communicate solutions to the practical problems faced by managers. Using an experiential learning method, students will focus on applying key principles to the human side of management through role-play exercises, simulations, expert talks, and group projects.

Assignments & Exams 1. 47.5% Connect Assignments and Quizzes, and Other Assignments (See Appendix E)  You will have relevant activities generated in Connect and accessed through Blackboard that need to be completed on a weekly basis. The activities are found in the appropriate module that corresponds to the chapters on the course site. The types of activities that may be assigned each week may vary. In addition to these activities, your instructor may assign you additional activities to complete online either individually or within groups. These assignments may or may not be listed on the syllabus: Connect: Quizzes ( 15%), Connect: Activities ( 12.5%), Connect: Application-Based Activities ( 10%), Connect: Boeing Continuing Cases ( 5%) and Connect: Self-Assessments (5%). You must access all the assignments via Blackboard only. Do not start assignments from Connect directly. (Blackboard is linked to Connect). 2. 17.5% Midterm Exam  The midterm exam will be administered to test your knowledge of the chapters covered prior to the exam as well as PowerPoint slides, discussions, articles, videos and any other appropriate media and information presented during the period.

3. 17.5% Final Exam  The final exam will be administered to test your knowledge of the chapters covered prior to the exam as well as discussions, articles, videos and any other appropriate media and information presented during the period. Although not specifically cumulative, you may need to know concepts from previous chapters in order to answer questions in successive chapters. 4. 10% Self-Reflection Paper (See Appendix C)  Reflect on what you learned from the self-assessments. 3-5 pages. APA format. See syllabus for details. A sample APA format to use as a guide can be found on Blackboard. 5. 7.5% Participation  Attendance records are kept for each session held. Chronic tardiness (entering the virtual room late) is considered disruptive to the learning environment and it will negatively impact your grades. In addition, absences will impact your grade because you will not be able to actively participate in class if you are not present. IMPORTANT: Every semester faculty must certify that students are actually attending courses. Certifying your class attendance is a CUNY requirement. During the verification of enrollment (VOE) period, your instructor will verify that you are listed on the roster and actually attending classes. Attendance in an online course is verified through logging into the course management system. For the purposes of verification, your early log-in into the course without completing any other activities could have a negative impact on your financial aid. For students who do not attend class and for whom there is no evidence of participation in the course (such as completed assignment, e-mail response, or other acknowledgement form), your instructor will mark you as “No, never attended” and thus you will not be certified. Your participation is essential to the success of this class. I define participation as more than logging onto the course website. Full participation consists of demonstrating that you are prepared for discussions or other course interactions (i.e., that you have read the assignment, completed individual assessments as assigned, and thought about the issues raised), asking thoughtful questions, responding respectfully to your peers, and engaging productively in all online discussions and/or exercises (including small group discussions). Therefore, the participation portion of your grade will be evaluated based on the following criteria:  Quality of your contributions to our virtual class discussions.  Engagement in any virtual group activities (including breakout rooms and poll activities).  Demonstrated active listening during the class meetings.  Preparedness (e.g., read assigned readings)  Utilization of the Blackboard/McGraw-Hill SmartBook platform. (Guidance will be given on the course website). Your utilization of SmartBook will not only assist you in learning the material, it will also assist me in tracking your progress and ensuring your success in the course. While SmartBook may not 9 | Page

be graded as an individual component, failure to utilize Blackboard/SmartBook may adversely affect your participation grade and your overall course grade. 6. SONA Research Requirement (See Appendix D)  To enhance your learning experience, you will be provided the opportunity to experience the methodology of management research. To accomplish this, you will need to earn 2 credits from the out of class research-based assignments. To qualify, you must participate in 2 studies, or review 2 research papers, or do one of each. Successful completion will give you one grade-level increase in your final grade (e.g., C+ to B-; A- to A). See Appendix D for detailed instructions. Keep in mind, the number of studies and the topics being studied fluctuate across the semester, so be sure to look into this early.
