.0 What have you learned? In MGT420, I have learned about how management plays an important role in an organization. Specifically, managers actively need managerial tasks which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling to achieve an organization’s goals effectively and efficiently. Moreover, in the planning topic, I have learned how to plan well in management. Planning is about determining and selecting the appropriate goals and courses of action using the time horizon, depending on levels and types of planning. MGT420 also taught me decision-making that takes place in any specific situation encountering problems and opportunities.

.0 What are the takeaway? The takeaway I got from MGT420 is all about the basic major function of management which is planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. If we fail to apply these elements, an organization will certainly not operate well and the path to success may seem unclear. This is because the people in a particular organization will be chaotic and unmotivated as they do not have any appropriate goals and organized specific tasks to refer to. In fact, without a controlling element, an organization will be easily defeated by the problems encountered. I am also aware that having a smart decision-making approach is crucial in our life. For example, there is nonprogrammed decision-making in response to unusual, unpredictable opportunities and threats such as the COVID-19 situation, whereas programmed decision-making is the routine situation that follows rules or guidelines.

.0 What are the skills acquired from this subject? The skills I acquired from this subject is decision-making skills through six steps: recognize the needs for a decision, generate alternatives, assess alternatives, choose among alternatives, implement the chosen alternatives, and learn from feedback. It involves critical thinking in analyzing the situation and generating the best decision to deal with the problems or opportunities in the best possible way. I also gain teamwork skills as it explains how crucial for managers or members in different departments to work together to speed up decision-making. I gain planning skills as I learn three important steps in planning which are identifying the goals, developing strategies, and implementing strategies with the resources available.

.0 Will you be using this skill in the future? I will use the skills in the future as Anton Chekov once said, “knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice”. I will also be using teamwork skills as we always need to work with others in harmony and effectively towards a common goal. For example, I will be an active contributor in a team, responsible for the task, and be respectful toward other team members' opinions. Moreover, I will implement decision-making skills to help raise and save a company from failing by handling the situations wisely as problems and opportunities always arise in a company or even our life. Whereas planning skills will be implemented by organizing my tasks based on priorities, and using proper strategies to complete tasks effectively.

.0 What are the benefits that you acquired from this subject? Firstly, MGT420 has given me early exposure to the business world especially in management. This is because I have no past knowledge of business management. Hence, this subject enables me to develop in-depth knowledge and comprehension of the key principles of management which encourages me to apply theoretical concepts to real-world business scenarios in my career after graduation. Next, I get to develop management skills in myself that will empower me to be a valuable contributor to any organization in the future. The managerial skills I acquired also will enable me to manage problems and current situations in business and society, allowing me to make educated managerial decisions that take ethical, economic, and social factors into account.

.0 What do you like best about this subject? What I like best about this subject is effective communication as a vital key to successful management. Effective communication is constantly needed between people within and outside the organization to inform workers about new policies, prepare for a weather disaster, convey information about a task that has to be completed, or listen to employee opinions. Based on Behavioral Management Theory, managers have to identify two assumption theories to communicate effectively. Theory X is a negative set assumption of employees where managers must closely supervise them whereas Theory Y is a positive set assumption where managers need to provide opportunities for them. Thus, it will improve understanding and cooperation from top managers to first-line managers and employees.

.0 Any suggestions for improvement for this subject? In my humble opinion, I suggest increasing group activities such as think-pair-share, virtual scavenger hunt, and presentation. This will improve student-lecturer interaction and encourage students to participate actively in class since it is online learning. Finally, because this is a more theoretical subject, I suggest including more graphic illustrations in the notes to keep students focused and avoid boredom during online classes. For example, MGT420 can provide interesting videos of Steve Jobs talking about managing people and the class may discuss together how Apple is organized. As a result, students will be exposed to relevant examples of management and answer the final exam confidently.
