Description

MHIX3040 Research Proposal: Samuel Melham: 45454396: How were the events of the Cronulla riots expressed throughout popular culture? Word Count: 495. Argument/s: Within the research essay, it will be contested that popular culture expressed the Cronulla riots as being a despicable, yet unsurprising chapter throughout Australia’s history1. It will also be argued that popular culture has pushed a firm narrative of hatred and a clash of cultures between Australians and Middle Eastern people2. Similarly, it will be contended that popular culture expressed Australia as being a country that is largely unaccepting of the Middle Eastern community and their culture and practices, with the Cronulla Riots being front and centre of this3. It will also be argued how popular culture has expressed the Cronulla riots as being a large contributing factor to the ever-growing tensions between Australians and the Middle Eastern community, and how racism is largely to blame. Similarly, it will be argued how as a result of the Cronulla riots; popular culture depicted the acceptance for multiculturalism as becoming somewhat non-existent 4.

Sources: 2 Primary and 3 Secondary: One primary source I will be utilizing in my research essay will be a piece from 60 minutes called Australia divided: After the Cronulla riots. This segment and popular culture within the media seeks to examine the division within Australia, which has been exposed by the riots. It also recounts first-hand stories from individuals to gain their perspectives. Similarly, this can be deemed as a primary source, as there were clips from the riots, and people who were involved and injured in the riots, who gave their accounts. Parts of this segment can also come under that of a secondary source. The next primary source is an image of an Australian group bashing a helpless Lebanese man, followed by a series of texts, and other images within the 1 Wright, C., 2021. realms of popular culture. It will be argued how this image was portrayed in popular culture to display racism and brutality that was present. For my secondary sources, I will be using an article from the conversation called Friday Essay: a response to the Cronulla riots, ten years on. The next secondary source that I will be using comes in the form of a cartoon image of the riots with racist protesters and passers who express their discontent for the hatred being displayed. The third secondary source that will be featuring in my research essay will be from the ABC program four corners, called The 2005 Cronulla Riots: the triggers, the aftermath, and the impact on Australia | Four Corners. This also contains within it a mixture of primary and secondary sources.
