It has come currently come to global attention that China is committing cultural genocide amongst the Uighurs population. According to the United Nations report, almost one million Uighurs are being held in what China calls “Re-education camps” (Lyons.2019). According to The Guardian, China had placed the Uighurs’ under extreme surveillance and were required to give blood samples and even biometric face scans. After learning about the circumstances of the Uighur Muslims and the situation of the camps it has piqued my interest to inquire about the efforts of other countries, specifically Western countries who pride themselves on being activists for human rights. The question I pose is “What efforts have been made from Western countries to exploit China’s underlying agenda of cultural genocide?”. In my argument I will explain how I believe that major efforts have not been made from Western countries such as Canada and the United States that claim to be advocates of human rights. In order to support this argument, I will begin by talking about how the crisis developed the important role of the Chinese Communist Party (CPP). I will then explain China’s great economic power and how many countries are silent on the issue due to their own economic interests. In order to further develop this point, I will specifically touch on China’s motives in committing such injustices against the Uighurs. Motives such as China being able to develop the Belt and Road initiate which is a modern take on the historic silk road which is made up of ports and railways. I will also touch on how China has made it increasingly difficult to gain more information about the crisis by restricting foreign journalist and preventing the Uighur people from communicating to their loved ones outside of China and how spyware has been installed to keep a close eye. Countries can now only rely on the statements of those who manage to escape the camps as well as satellite images which gives many governments who are against the actions of China a hard time to prove that China is committing a slow-burning act. I will be using articles that explain the rise of the crisis to help

understand the roots of the Uighur people, what triggered the Chinese government to take such action and how the situation rapidly evolved to what it is today. I will also be using articles to help understand China’s economic standing, it’s development and its impact on other countries to see how that may be hindering or preventing countries to speak against China’s human rights violations. I will also be using articles and letters to explain why some countries have decided to condemn China’s human rights efforts in spite of the reality of China committing injustices. I will also be taking a look at the United Nations Reports and the Human Rights Watch regarding this genocide to see what they have advise China and other countries to do.
