Interview: Middle Childhood (Ages 7-11) - 20 points Subject’s First Name__________________________ Age_________ Grade_____________ The interview assignment consists of questions for the school-age child you will interview. Be sure to pay careful attention to the summary section that follows the set of interview questions. In this section, you will make conclusions based on your subject’s answers to the interview questions. Always support your conclusions with evidence from the interview. There is no requirement for who you can interview. You can interview a friend, neighbor, or family member, as long as they fit the age.

Part I Interview Questions (20 Points) 1.

Describe yourself. If you met a fairy and were granted one wish that you could change anything about yourself that you wanted— but only one thing— what would that thing be?

What are your special interests or hobbies outside of school? Do you take lessons, attend special interest classes, or play on any teams? Do you belong to any organizations such as Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts?

Who is your best friend? How long have you known him (her)? What do you like about this friend? What do you think your best friend would say he (she) likes about you?

If I asked the other kids in your class what you are good at, what do you think they would tell me?

What do you think it is about someone that makes other people like him (her)? (What makes a person popular?)

What do you think it is about someone that could make other people, not like him (her) and not want to be his (her) friend? (What makes a child unpopular?)

8.

What is your favorite subject in school? What is your least favorite? How do you feel about school?

9.

Do you have any special tricks or techniques that help you remember information in school?

10. What responsibilities do you have at home? 11. What is your place in the birth order of your family? 12. What do you like about it or dislike about it?

13. If you could be like any other person, who would you be like? What do you admire about

this person? 14. What do you feel is the greatest challenge or problem in the world today? What can we

do about it? 15. Imagine you are at the grocery store, and there on the floor in the soft drinks aisle, you

see a wallet. You can see that this wallet has money in it: some of the bills are showing at the corners. No one else is in this aisle but you. What would you do? Why?

Part II Interview Summary (30 Points) For each of the following questions, you must support your response by doing the following:    

Reference the question number from the interview. Summarize the child’s responses. Briefly discuss how it relates to the summary question. Provide at least two examples for each question.

Which of Piaget’s periods of cognitive development do you believe this child is in? (p. 301-304) Support your conclusion.

Which of Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development do you believe this child is in? (p. 333-337) Support your conclusion.

Where do you see this child being in his or her moral development? (p. 391-393) Support your conclusion.

4.

What is this child’s social status/friendships among his or her peers? (p. 339-344) Support your conclusion.

5.

Using the Chess and Thomas Model of Temperament (p. 188), identify the pattern or profile (easy, difficult, slow-to-warm-up) this school-age child adolescent appears to fit and describe 3 traits/aspects (9 dimensions) of this adolescent’s temperament. Support your conclusion.
