Case Study Questions

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of allowing employees to use their personal mobile devices for work? When you're trying to make a decision about whether or not you should allow personal phones in your office, there are several aspects to consider. There are pros and cons to the privilege of being able to use your personal mobile devices at your workplace. Few advantages include expense deductions, improved efficiency, accessibility to contacts, and overall employee satisfaction. There would be significant savings for the IT department of any company that allows BYOD. This is because workers will purchase their desired devices at their own expense. This contributes to improving productivity as individuals tend to work effectively with technologies they are familiar with. Mobile devices also have the benefits of convenience and speed. Employees can complete reports, keep up with emails, review relevant documents, and conveniently contact coworkers. One could simply use their device to contact clients, co-workers, managers, and directors at any time, regardless of where they are. In terms of enabling staff to use their personal devices, there are just as many disadvantages. Since workers tend to use more than one kind of mobile device, companies need to quickly and flexibly confirm that their employees can still retain productivity. To ensure that confidential material and company documents remain in the right hands, security standards must also be increased. Due to the variety of devices and operating systems being used, the delivery of technical support can often become challenging. 2. What management, organization, and technology factors should be addressed when deciding whether to allow employees to use their personal mobile devices for work? Management, organization, and technology must be taken into account when deciding whether to allow employees to use their personal smartphones for work. In regard to management, The manager must ensure that the company has an appropriate way of monitoring all devices used in the workplace. Another factor to be taken into account is that the company must ensure that the staff remains focused on the job and that they should not be disturbed by their personal issues. A company's software development teams should have one professional with the ability to make the applications on mobile devices easy to access and maintain. The apps must be capable of connecting to the company's IT network and ERP system. When considering the organizational factor, organizations must use mobile devices in a way that suits the needs of the corporate and IT strategy. Establishing a formal inventory system would also be a key determinant since it will keep track of which devices are being used by whom and for what purpose. Functions such as location determination, applications, if the device is used, and more should also be available. With advanced knowledge of workplace devices, organizations will also be able to offer technical support to every employee. If they want to gain an edge with BYOD, businesses must be technically skilled when considering technological factors. Realistically, if there is a wide variety of devices and operating systems, technical support representatives may make their jobs harder than necessary compared to if they had similar devices for all employees. A business may opt to hire a specialist in order to ensure that new technologies are easy to use and very useful on

mobile devices. Companies must use a system that will keep their information secure outside of work with functions to delete this data if the computer is compromised or lost. 3. Evaluate how the companies described in this case study dealt with the challenges of BYOD. There are multiple companies mentioned in this case study that have dealt with the challenges of BYOD in their own way. According to the Marble Security Lab study, 1.2 million Android devices and iOS Applications show that commercial enterprise information was not adequately covered by using apps and mobile devices. Therefore, in all of them, businesses are now using technology to remotely erase data from computers and encrypt information or data as though the computers were stolen or lost. It is not possible to access the data. The next company discussed in the case study is known as SAP. In a situation where a device is stolen or lost, many things can go wrong. This is why SAP developed a security technique for decommissioning the mobile phone. The company has made a BYOD policy and made strong efforts to educate employees about BYOD. One of the policies includes that the company does not support hardware equipment for workers. The next company is the Swiss global reinsurance in which they developed a highly secured, modular mobility management (EMM) scheme for companies. A local partner was also formed to handle all business activities. The EMM also aims to incorporate identity, the extent of access to business data, and the resources of the organization. 4. Allowing employees to use their own smartphones for work will save the company money. Do you agree? Why or why not? Yes, I most definitely agree with this statement. Switching employees from a companyowned device to their own will surely reduce the company’s monthly cost. Although many organizations offer smart product reimbursement, there is usually just a minimal to no reimbursement on a second device such as a smartphone. iT services will also be deduced as employees begin to use their own devices. Companies do not have to pay for maintenance, insurance plans, or significant software such as antiviruses. The annual cost savings from BYOD can easily be in the hundreds per employee, per year.
