After reading my selected piece, the purpose Sedaris wrote this piece was to vent some anger that he had towards his instructor onto paper rather than lashing out at her in class, thereby giving her more reason to pick on him and hate him more. The key points used in this piece by Sedaris, that led me to believe the above statement

were abundantly clear. First, he wrote the piece in first person using the words “I” and “me” throughout the entirety of it. Secondly, it seems as though he uses humorous incidents to mask his pain. I do not believe anyone else would have understood this action if they, themselves, had not been in the class with him. Lastly, he annotates, in his piece, the names of people he encountered as well as the places he had been so that he could remember them later in his life.

After reading Sedaris’s piece, I have concluded that he wrote this piece as journal entry. I believe he may have done this for a couple of reasons. One reason he may have done this was so that he, himself, could read it later in his own life and be able to recall these incidents and secondly, so that maybe if his entries were ever found by his family, they could read them and understand what he went through....
