LESSON 10: Writing Creative Nonfiction LESSON 10.1

Writing a Mini Critique and Writing Creative Nonfiction Craft

Now that you are skilled in reading the works of creative nonfiction, we will move forward in writing your story. Statistics demonstrate that reading helps you to develop writing skills, but writing helps with your cognitive development, your organizational abilities and the power to persuade others. Let us define first what is writing? Writing is, in principle, a representation of language rather than a direct representation of thought, and spoken language has several levels of structure, including sentences, words, syllables, and phonemes (the smallest units of speech used to distinguish one word or morpheme from another), any of which a writing system can "map onto" or represent. Writing, like any other creative skill, improves with practice on the same case writing. Writing is one of the important skills in communication, having this skill is essential may it be in organization or in work. And good writing skills allow you to communicate your message with clarity. Here are the things we need to consider in writing: 1. Principles of Good Writing  Have a purpose.  Use clear language.  Be objective.  It has structure.  Use choice of words.  Be mindful of your punctuation.  Grammatically correct.  Proofread.  Style. 2. Know the Writing Process  Prewriting (You have to find your idea, build your idea, plan and structure it).  Writing (This is where you start your rough draft, for the meantime forget first about the word count and grammar. Don't worry if you go off track at times; even the best authors go through several drafts before producing their best work).  Revision (You can change your story in this stage. You are allowed to add, rearrange, remove, and replace).  Editing (Check for repetition, clarity, grammar, spelling and punctuation).  Publishing( The final writing is shared with the group in different forms like printed or online) 3. Barriers of Writing Skills 3|Page

 Noise (this will interfere your concentration so make sure you are in the place that you are comfortable to work).  Lack of effective tools (These are not limited to gadgets, but also the material like paper or pen/pencil, just make sure that the tools that you are using are helpful).  Training for writing (In your years of high school at least you were able to write simple essay written in English language, you don’t need to be an expert in writing you need to start from scratch so that you’ll learn along the way).  Scope of motivation (In writing you really need motivation, don’t say that you don’t have anything to share. Look around your surroundings and recall your life experiences for sure there’s something that will motivate you).  Writers’ block (Do not start yourself in negative mood, be positive! It’s normal that you will feel pressure. The reason: “I will not write, I’m not good at it anyway”, “what will others say about my writing?”, “I’m not good enough, I will just embarrass myself, my and teachers” will not get you to the process, it will drag you down instead of letting you learn). You are probably wondering why it is important for you to write. Well, there are benefits to creative writing that will help you in the future: 1. Imagination and Creativity It allows you to use your imaginations and exercise your creative mind. It increases your ability to think of new ideas. This broadens your thinking, which can lead to progress in a variety of fields, including problem solving and research. 2. Self-Expression You also struggle to understand and communicate your emotions. You as the student have a safe space to explore by writing, and this can be a very useful method for sharing your feelings. 3. Self-Confidence Writing allows you to express yourself and your thoughts more freely, allowing you to grow your "voice." These advances have the potential to boost your self-esteem. 4. Communication and Persuasion Skills 4|Page

A well-written piece requires a lot of thought, planning, organization, and language use to make a point. What a perfect opportunity for you to practice laying out your ideas and attempting to persuade others of your point of view.

Another tip that you can apply before writing your piece is to have a basic understanding of rhetorical approach to writing in which we discuss after the module 5 and 6. Here are as follows:  Rhetorical situation  You consider (writer, audience, purpose/s, topic, and context)  Rhetorical mode  You consider your style of writing (narration, description, exemplification, process analysis, definition, comparison and contrast, argumentation, cause and effect, classification/division, analogy, deductive/inductive analysis, and persuasion) LESSON 10. 2 Research first the meaning of the following words before reading the story.

Forever “Baguio-Ed” on My Mind” Written by: Bernard Liwag

I was already in my early 20’s when I first saw the City of Pines. As I could not have afforded to travel in earlier years, I waited until I had found a job and could finally afford to pay for mu own transportation fare. The opportunity came when I, together with a colleague in the public school where I used to teach, was invited to a three-day Teachers Congress in Baguio. My companion had been to Baguio several times in the past, so he was not so excited as I was when we received the invitation. I believe he tried to suppress a smile when I intimated that it was my first time to go there, as if to suggest that I had missed half of my life. We were billeted in Teachers Camp, a big complex of buildings for transients built by the Americans in the 1900s. We stayed in Romulo Hall, one of the earliest and most well-preserved structures in the area. During one of our dinners, some of my fellow attendees exchanged stories about ghostly apparitions- of a lady dressed in white, of a Caucasian looking soldier dressed in colonial military uniform, of spooky shadows in the washrooms. Although I am obdurate nonbeliever in ghosts, the stories easily piqued my interest. I did not see any ghost but I did get numb, not with fear but with cold while taking a quick shower. The next day, the session ended rather early so my friend and I went to the public market to buy some souvenirs for our friends and love ones in Manila. For this first -timer taking the non-air conditioned Baguio cab was exhilarating. I was looking around the whole time I was inside the cab, marveling at the houses that were precariously standing on the edges of cliffs. 5|Page

When we reached the market, we wasted no time walking about. Although Baguio is well known for its ukay-ukay (that is, hand-me-down clothes which, if one is lucky, could be signature brands), I did not buy any, thinking that I could buy ukay-ukay clothes almost anywhere in the NCR. Instead, I bought two miniature versions of the bulul, a wooden figure used by the Igorots to guard their rice crops. One was squatting while the other was standing and holding a spear and a shield. The cultural students in me was trying to figure out how icons sacred to the Igorots could become commodified as souvenir items. I also bought eight small clay jars, not bigger than the palm of one’s hand and sold at Php 5 each to serve as my display items at home. We also went to a relatively big mall, the type I had never seen before. While malls in Manila are comfort zones for denizens wanting to escape from the heat of the city’s brutal and unmerciful summer, this big Baguio mall has no air conditioning unit, with the city’s sleep-inducing breeze as its natural source of ventilation. From the second-and third-floor balconies I was able to het panoramic view of the city-of Baguio Cathedral, of the University of Cordilleras, of parks dotted with pine trees, of rocky hills enveloped in fog and mist. Any first-timer should not miss strolling around Burnham Park. Now on my own (because my co-teacher chose to take a nap instead), I enjoyed going around the park without sweating so much. The temperature was probably 15 degrees Celsius or thereabouts. And though I did not try the rowboat, simply watching the young and old (perhaps some were from Manila like me) enjoy their time on the human-made lake could already be a source of delight for any observer. For snacks, I devoured two sticks of banana cue. I walked around again after eating and tried a ten-minute, half body massage service at the center of the park. At night, my peripatetic friend and I walked down Session Road and ended up in an open-air eatery near the public market where we wolfed down grilled hito while guzzling some beer. After a few bottles, we continued our drinking in a wholesome bar just a few steps away, where we also sang our hearts out like spoiled, pleasureseeking bachelors until about 2 in the morning. On reaching Teachers Camp around 3, I hit my bed and caught a few hours of sleep before coming back to Manila. While the Cubao-bound bus was weaving its way along Marcos Highway, I promised to go back. I immediately fell in love with Baguio- so in love that since then, I have made it to point to go back to the City of Pines at least once a year, this time my wife and daughter. Since then, I have also visited the other tourist spots- Mines View Park, Wright Park, the Bencab Museum; and, upon the insistence of my seven-year-old brat, haunted buildings like the Diplomat Hotel and Laperal House. Even if I have visited some of the Baguio spots more than once, I have not grown tired of them. Every Baguio experience, to me, is always unique and memorable. Questions for Discussion: 1. Why did the narrator reach Baguio City rather late in life as he claims? Which places in Baguio was the narrator able to see? Retell his experiences in each place. __________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 6|Page

3. It is said that Baguio, like many other cities in the Philippines, is suffering from traffic congestion, pollution, and even overpopulation. What do you think should be done to retain Baguio’s reputation as major tourist spot? __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________
