Describe how nutrition affects fertility. Summarize the physiological changes of pregnancy, how they affect the nutrient requirements of a woman, and list nutrients that may need to be supplemented during pregnancy. Define “success” in terms of positive health outcomes during pregnancy and identify lifestyle factors that promote a successful pregnancy for both the mother and the infant. Specify optimal ranges of weight gain during pregnancy for women with low, healthy, or high prepregnancy BMI. Outline guidelines for exercise during pregnancy. Describe the discomforts and complications of pregnancy that may be reduced by improving dietary patterns. Summarize the physiological processes involved in breastfeeding and how breastfeeding affects the nutritional requirements of a woman. Design an adequate, balanced meal plan for a pregnant or breastfeeding woman based on MyPlate. List several advantages of breastfeeding for both the mother and the infant. Relate nutritional status of the parents to the risk of birth defects in the child.
