The generic name is the drug’s official name and is descriptive of its chemical structure and is written in lowercase letters. A brand name is the private property of the drug manufacturer that makes the drug and is registered by the U.S. Patent Office as well as approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
