Description

Monarchical Rule

A monarchical society is ruled by a king or queen. The rulers of a monarchical state inherit their power from their parents or other relatives. Some monarchical nations are characterized as "elected monarchies," in which citizens elect a monarch, but the majority of monarchical states have been hereditary, with monarchical control passed down from father to child and lasting for the ruler's lifetime. Although this form of administration is uncommon today, it was widespread in the eighteenth century. The majority of existing monarchical countries, such as the United Kingdom, are constitutional monarchies in which the king or queen serves only as a ceremonial figurehead. Monarkhia is the Greek root word for "rule of one." In short, monarchies are systems of government that entail there is one leader.

Fact: Monarchy is the oldest form of government in the United Kingdom.
