MYLIFEWITHOUTAMORNINGROUTINE

herewasatimeinmylifewhenmymorningsfollowednopatternatall Ihadjustquitmycorporatejob.Asaresult,Ihadnowheretobeat8:00 a.m.,andcertainlynowherethatrequiredIwearanythingmorethanat shirtandshorts. I took full advantage of the freedom. I woke up without an alarm, usually after 10:00 a.m. I then puttered around for awhile, reading the news, checking outrandomblogs,andeatingbreakfast. Eventually, I showered, brushed my teeth, gathered my gear (laptop, wate bottle, etc.), and headed for a local coffeeshop. Sometimes, I left my home a 11:00a.m.Othertimes,Ileftat1:00p.m. Inotherwords,mymorningswereacompletewasteoftime.Ihadnoroutine inplace. Worse,the impact ofthis oversight extendedbeyond my morninghours. I hadarippleeffectontherestofmyday.IfIweretodescribemydispositionina singleword,itwouldbe“lethargic.”Ilackedenergyandmotivation.Ifeltbored andrestless. Asyoucanimagine,myproductivityplummeted.Timeslippedthroughmy fingers. Iwasn’tignorantaboutmorningroutines.Farfromit.Infact,Ihadfollowed aneffectiveroutinepriortoquittingmycorporatejob.I’dwakeupat4:00a.m. pourmyselfacupofcoffee,andstartcompilingandreviewingsalesdatafrom thepreviousday.Then, around5:30a.m.,I’d jumpintheshower, getdressed and head off to Starbucks to write. I’d spend from 6:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. a

Starbuckswriting,andthenheadtotheoffice. Mymorningsprogressedlikeclockwork.Asaresult,thevolumeofwork completed - important work, the type that complemented my goals - wa massive. At one point, I had hundreds of websites, had written a bestselling book, and wrote a weekly newsletter read by thousands of subscribers. And wasputtingin50to60hoursaweekatmycorporatejob. It’s an understatement to say there was a notable difference in my productivitywithamorningroutineandmyproductivitywithoutone. Therewasnocontest.Mymorningswereamesswithoutaroutine. Things are different in my life today. I’ve created morning routines tha energize me, help me to focus, and increase my productivity. For me, thes thingssetthestageforasuccessfulday. I’llshareoneofmyroutineswithyoulaterinthisbook.Moreimportantly I’llshowyouhowtocreateroutinesthathelpyoutoachieveyourgoals. Beforewegoanyfurther,let’stalkaboutthemanywaysinwhichhavinga morningroutinewillimproveyourlife.

10WAYSAMORNINGROUTINEWILLIMPROVEYOUR LIFE

T

he benefits you’ll experience when you incorporate a morning routine into your daily life are going to be unique to you. Some people find they’re more productive throughout the day. Others discover they fee more relaxed and mindful. Still others are surprised to learn that performing a purposeful morning routine makes them feel more energized, confident, and focused. Most people find, after a week or two, that the thought of waking up no longer depresses them. In fact, they look forward to getting up early becaus theyknowtheirroutinesaregoingtohelpthemtoexperienceasuccessfulday. You’re going to experience benefits that will literally transform your life Herearethe10waysamorningroutinecandoso. #1-ItWillGiveYourDayStructure Following a deliberate and carefully-planned routine each morning will lend morestructuretoyourday.Therepetitionofyourchosenactivities(moreonthis later)willmakeyourmorning,aswellastherestofyourday,morepredictable This,inturn,willhelpyoutoattendtotaskswithgreaterefficiency. #2-You’llExperienceMoreEnergy Many morning activities can dramatically increase your energy. And

importantly, some will help to ensure your energy levels don’t crash mid morning. For example, exercising, going for a short walk, and eating a high-protein breakfastwillmakeyou feelenergized.Somepeoplefindthatpracticingyoga meditating,andtakingacoldshowerdoesthetrick. We’lltalkmoreaboutdesigningaqualitymorningroutineinPartII. #3-You’llBeLessSusceptibleToDecisionFatigue The more decisions you make, the lower the quality of those decisions. Thi effectis called decision fatigue.[1]As this type offatigue sets in, youbecome lesscapableofcontrollingyourimpulsesandmakingrationalchoices. A morning routine minimizes the number of decisions you make in the morning. The activities you choose become habit, precluding the hard task o decidingwhethertodothem.Makingfewerdecisionsinthemorningallowsyou toconserveyourwillpowerfordecision-makingduringtherestofyourday. #4-You’llBeMoreProductiveThroughoutTheDay You’refamiliarwiththiseffectfromfirsthandexperience.Whenyourmorning starts well, you feel more incontrol of yourday. Partof thisfeeling is dueto havingapositiveoutlook.Partofitisduetohavingmoreenergy,feelingmore excited, and experiencing less stress. And part of it stems from having a firm grasponwhatyouneedtogetdonethroughouttheday. A quality morning routine prepares your mind to deal with the inevitable dailychallengesandobstaclesthatwouldotherwisederailyourproductivity. #5-You’llFeelBetter Your morning routine will include activities that are healthy for your mind body, or both. For example, you might start your day with a glass of water followed by yoga and meditation. Or you might decide to go for a jog immediately after waking, followed by a hot shower and a high-protein breakfast. Compare these examples to the process most people go through in th morning.Theywakeup,reachdesperatelyforthesnoozebutton,andgobackto sleep.Theyeventuallydragthemselvesoutofbedforaquickshower,adonuto

danish, and coffee. Then, they rush to the office or scramble to get their kid readyforschool. Nowondersomanypeoplefeelfatiguedthroughouttheday! #6-You’llExperienceLessStress You’ve experienced the stress that accompanieswaking up atthe last possibl momentandrushingtogetthingsdone.Allofushave.Whetherwe’retryingto get to the office on time, or makesure our kids areready for school(dressed lunches prepared, etc.), the flurry of last-minute tasks can cause significan anxiety. Agoodmorningroutinewilleliminatethestress.It’llgiveyouplentyoftime to address everything that needs your attention. By the time you leave you home,you’llfeelasifyou’reincompletecontrolofyourday. #7-You’llEnjoyAMorePositiveMindset Whenyou havemoreenergy, feelexcited andmorein control,and experience lessstress,it’sdifficulttohaveanegativeattitude.You’llnaturallyfeelhappier You’llalsobe moreoptimisticaboutwhat youcanaccomplishduring theday regardlessoftheobstaclesyoumightface. Don’t be surprised if your coworkers or family members note the positive changeinyourdisposition.Moreover,don’tbesurprisediftheygravitatetoward you;apositivetemperamentisappealingtoothers. #8-You’llImproveYourHealth Theactivitiesyouchoosetodointhemorningshouldsupportgoodphysicaland mentalhealth.Above,Imentionedyoga,meditation,jogging,eatinganutritious breakfast,anddrinkingwaterasexamples. Whenyoustartthedaywithaqualitymorningroutine,you’llfindthatyouenjoy agreatersenseofclarity.You’llbebetterabletofocusonwhateveryouneedto getdone. Partofitisduetofeelinghealthierandlessstressed.Whenyourbodyfeel good and your mind isn’t burdened with anxiety, you can more easily stay on task. THEIMPORTANCEOFINTENTIONALITY

onsiderthereasonsyouwakeupinthemorning.Maybeit’stoensure youarriveatyourworkplaceontime.Perhapsyoudragyourselfouto bedtomakesureyourchildrenarereadyforschool.Ormaybeyou’rea freelancer. You know that stayingin bed means you’re not working. Andtha meansyou’renotearningmoney. Theseintentionsarebasedonnecessity.Youactbecauseyoufeelyouhav to. Forexample,ifyou’rehabituallylatetowork,youmightgetfired.Ifyoufai toget your kidsto school ontime, their tardinessmight negativelyaffect thei grades. If, as a freelancer, you fail to finish projects, you won’t get paid fo them. Ourintentionsare powerful.Theycan motivateus.They canspurus todo things we might otherwise believe are impossible. But they can also cause u unnecessarystress. Thegoodnewsisthatyoucancreateanyintentionsyoudesire.You’rethe captainofyourship.You’rethedirectorofyourlifestory. That’simportantinthecontextofdesigningaqualitymorningroutine.Itcan makethedifferencebetweenstickingtoyourroutineeachmorning-andfeeling great for doing so! - and allowing your mornings to be filled with dread and anxiety. I’ll use one of my morning routines as an example. (I perform differen routinesbasedonwhatIneedtoaccomplishonagivenday.)Here’smytypica Sunday:

5:30a.m.-Wakeup 5:35a.m.-Brushteeth,usetherestroom,trytogetmyhairunder control,andgetdressed. 5:45a.m.-Drink8oz.ofwater. 5:50a.m.-Drivetoalocalcoffeeshop. 6:00a.m.-OrderaCafèAmericano(caffeinejumpstartsmybrain). 6:05a.m.-ReadarticlesbywriterswhosestylesIenjoy.Listento Spanishflamencoguitarmusic(e.g.Armik,JesseCook,etc.)for backgroundmusicwhileIread. 6:45a.m.-CheckAmazonsalesreports. 6:50a.m.-QueueChopin’sPreludeinEminor,Op.28,No.4.Start writing. Ihaveaspecificintentioninmindforthismorningroutine:preparingmysel towrite.Thisintentionisn’tborneofnecessity.It’sborneofpassion.Igotobed on Saturday excited to wake up the next morning and go through my routine becauseI’mexcitedtowrite. Whenyouactwithpurpose,youcreateintentionsthatareimportanttoyou Theyexciteyou.Importantly,theyspuryoutotakeaction.Forexample,youno longer scramble each morning after wasting precious time snoozing, checking socialmedia,andwatchingtelevision.Instead,yousetyourintention(preferably thenightbefore),whichinformsyourbehaviorthenextmorning. Ideally, your intentions will exhilarate you. You’ll look forward to making themhappen. For example, you might create a morning routine designed to help you to loseweight.Thethoughtofreachingyourdesiredweightshouldthrillyou,and influenceyourbehavioraccordingly! Youmaycomeupwitharoutinethat’llhelpyoutorelaxandfocus.Inthi case,findingyourcenterandstartingyourdayfreeofstressshouldexciteyou! You might develop a routine that’ll spur you to start that side busines you’ve been thinking about launching. The prospect of earning a side income andperhapsevengrowingtheventureintoafull-timebusiness,shouldgalvanize you! Mypointisthatintentionalityisacrucialpartofcreatingandmaintaininga qualitymorningroutine.Thebestpartisthatyou’reincompletecontrol. You decide what you’d like to accomplish. Then, you create a morning routinethatperfectlycomplementsthatintention. Canyouseehowstartingyourmorninginthismannercanpositivelyimpac the rest of your day? You’ll feel more rested, energized, and focused, all o

whichwillmakeyoumoreeffective.
