MYLIFEWITHOUTAMORNINGROUTINE

herewasatimeinmylifewhenmymorningsfollowednopatternatall Ihadjustquitmycorporatejob.Asaresult,Ihadnowheretobeat8:00 a.m.,andcertainlynowherethatrequiredIwearanythingmorethanat shirtandshorts. I took full advantage of the freedom. I woke up without an alarm, usually after 10:00 a.m. I then puttered around for awhile, reading the news, checking outrandomblogs,andeatingbreakfast. Eventually, I showered, brushed my teeth, gathered my gear (laptop, wate bottle, etc.), and headed for a local coffeeshop. Sometimes, I left my home a 11:00a.m.Othertimes,Ileftat1:00p.m. Inotherwords,mymorningswereacompletewasteoftime.Ihadnoroutine inplace. Worse,the impact ofthis oversight extendedbeyond my morninghours. I hadarippleeffectontherestofmyday.IfIweretodescribemydispositionina singleword,itwouldbe“lethargic.”Ilackedenergyandmotivation.Ifeltbored andrestless. Asyoucanimagine,myproductivityplummeted.Timeslippedthroughmy fingers. Iwasn’tignorantaboutmorningroutines.Farfromit.Infact,Ihadfollowed aneffectiveroutinepriortoquittingmycorporatejob.I’dwakeupat4:00a.m. pourmyselfacupofcoffee,andstartcompilingandreviewingsalesdatafrom thepreviousday.Then, around5:30a.m.,I’d jumpintheshower, getdressed and head off to Starbucks to write. I’d spend from 6:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. a
Starbuckswriting,andthenheadtotheoffice. Mymorningsprogressedlikeclockwork.Asaresult,thevolumeofwork completed - important work, the type that complemented my goals - wa massive. At one point, I had hundreds of websites, had written a bestselling book, and wrote a weekly newsletter read by thousands of subscribers. And wasputtingin50to60hoursaweekatmycorporatejob. It’s an understatement to say there was a notable difference in my productivitywithamorningroutineandmyproductivitywithoutone. Therewasnocontest.Mymorningswereamesswithoutaroutine. Things are different in my life today. I’ve created morning routines tha energize me, help me to focus, and increase my productivity. For me, thes thingssetthestageforasuccessfulday. I’llshareoneofmyroutineswithyoulaterinthisbook.Moreimportantly I’llshowyouhowtocreateroutinesthathelpyoutoachieveyourgoals. Beforewegoanyfurther,let’stalkaboutthemanywaysinwhichhavinga morningroutinewillimproveyourlife.
10WAYSAMORNINGROUTINEWILLIMPROVEYOUR LIFE

he benefits you’ll experience when you incorporate a morning routine into your daily life are going to be unique to you. Some people find they’re more productive throughout the day. Others discover they fee more relaxed and mindful. Still others are surprised to learn that performing a purposeful morning routine makes them feel more energized, confident, and focused. Most people find, after a week or two, that the thought of waking up no longer depresses them. In fact, they look forward to getting up early becaus theyknowtheirroutinesaregoingtohelpthemtoexperienceasuccessfulday. You’re going to experience benefits that will literally transform your life Herearethe10waysamorningroutinecandoso. #1-ItWillGiveYourDayStructure Following a deliberate and carefully-planned routine each morning will lend morestructuretoyourday.Therepetitionofyourchosenactivities(moreonthis later)willmakeyourmorning,aswellastherestofyourday,morepredictable This,inturn,willhelpyoutoattendtotaskswithgreaterefficiency. #2-You’llExperienceMoreEnergy Many morning activities can dramatically increase your energy. And
importantly, some will help to ensure your energy levels don’t crash mid morning. For example, exercising, going for a short walk, and eating a high-protein breakfastwillmakeyou feelenergized.Somepeoplefindthatpracticingyoga meditating,andtakingacoldshowerdoesthetrick. We’lltalkmoreaboutdesigningaqualitymorningroutineinPartII. #3-You’llBeLessSusceptibleToDecisionFatigue The more decisions you make, the lower the quality of those decisions. Thi effectis called decision fatigue.[1]As this type offatigue sets in, youbecome lesscapableofcontrollingyourimpulsesandmakingrationalchoices. A morning routine minimizes the number of decisions you make in the morning. The activities you choose become habit, precluding the hard task o decidingwhethertodothem.Makingfewerdecisionsinthemorningallowsyou toconserveyourwillpowerfordecision-makingduringtherestofyourday. #4-You’llBeMoreProductiveThroughoutTheDay You’refamiliarwiththiseffectfromfirsthandexperience.Whenyourmorning starts well, you feel more incontrol of yourday. Partof thisfeeling is dueto havingapositiveoutlook.Partofitisduetohavingmoreenergy,feelingmore excited, and experiencing less stress. And part of it stems from having a firm grasponwhatyouneedtogetdonethroughouttheday. A quality morning routine prepares your mind to deal with the inevitable dailychallengesandobstaclesthatwouldotherwisederailyourproductivity. #5-You’llFeelBetter Your morning routine will include activities that are healthy for your mind body, or both. For example, you might start your day with a glass of water followed by yoga and meditation. Or you might decide to go for a jog immediately after waking, followed by a hot shower and a high-protein breakfast. Compare these examples to the process most people go through in th morning.Theywakeup,reachdesperatelyforthesnoozebutton,andgobackto sleep.Theyeventuallydragthemselvesoutofbedforaquickshower,adonuto
danish, and coffee. Then, they rush to the office or scramble to get their kid readyforschool. Nowondersomanypeoplefeelfatiguedthroughouttheday! #6-You’llExperienceLessStress You’ve experienced the stress that accompanieswaking up atthe last possibl momentandrushingtogetthingsdone.Allofushave.Whetherwe’retryingto get to the office on time, or makesure our kids areready for school(dressed lunches prepared, etc.), the flurry of last-minute tasks can cause significan anxiety. Agoodmorningroutinewilleliminatethestress.It’llgiveyouplentyoftime to address everything that needs your attention. By the time you leave you home,you’llfeelasifyou’reincompletecontrolofyourday. #7-You’llEnjoyAMorePositiveMindset Whenyou havemoreenergy, feelexcited andmorein control,and experience lessstress,it’sdifficulttohaveanegativeattitude.You’llnaturallyfeelhappier You’llalsobe moreoptimisticaboutwhat youcanaccomplishduring theday regardlessoftheobstaclesyoumightface. Don’t be surprised if your coworkers or family members note the positive changeinyourdisposition.Moreover,don’tbesurprisediftheygravitatetoward you;apositivetemperamentisappealingtoothers. #8-You’llImproveYourHealth Theactivitiesyouchoosetodointhemorningshouldsupportgoodphysicaland mentalhealth.Above,Imentionedyoga,meditation,jogging,eatinganutritious breakfast,anddrinkingwaterasexamples. Partofitisduetofeelinghealthierandlessstressed.Whenyourbodyfeel good and your mind isn’t burdened with anxiety, you can more easily stay on task. onsiderthereasonsyouwakeupinthemorning.Maybeit’stoensure youarriveatyourworkplaceontime.Perhapsyoudragyourselfouto bedtomakesureyourchildrenarereadyforschool.Ormaybeyou’rea freelancer. You know that stayingin bed means you’re not working. Andtha meansyou’renotearningmoney. Theseintentionsarebasedonnecessity.Youactbecauseyoufeelyouhav to. Forexample,ifyou’rehabituallylatetowork,youmightgetfired.Ifyoufai toget your kidsto school ontime, their tardinessmight negativelyaffect thei grades. If, as a freelancer, you fail to finish projects, you won’t get paid fo them. Ourintentionsare powerful.Theycan motivateus.They canspurus todo things we might otherwise believe are impossible. But they can also cause u unnecessarystress. Thegoodnewsisthatyoucancreateanyintentionsyoudesire.You’rethe captainofyourship.You’rethedirectorofyourlifestory. That’simportantinthecontextofdesigningaqualitymorningroutine.Itcan makethedifferencebetweenstickingtoyourroutineeachmorning-andfeeling great for doing so! - and allowing your mornings to be filled with dread and anxiety. I’ll use one of my morning routines as an example. (I perform differen routinesbasedonwhatIneedtoaccomplishonagivenday.)Here’smytypica Sunday:
5:30a.m.-Wakeup 5:35a.m.-Brushteeth,usetherestroom,trytogetmyhairunder control,andgetdressed. 5:45a.m.-Drink8oz.ofwater. 5:50a.m.-Drivetoalocalcoffeeshop. 6:00a.m.-OrderaCafèAmericano(caffeinejumpstartsmybrain). 6:05a.m.-ReadarticlesbywriterswhosestylesIenjoy.Listento Spanishflamencoguitarmusic(e.g.Armik,JesseCook,etc.)for backgroundmusicwhileIread. 6:45a.m.-CheckAmazonsalesreports. 6:50a.m.-QueueChopin’sPreludeinEminor,Op.28,No.4.Start writing. Ihaveaspecificintentioninmindforthismorningroutine:preparingmysel towrite.Thisintentionisn’tborneofnecessity.It’sborneofpassion.Igotobed on Saturday excited to wake up the next morning and go through my routine becauseI’mexcitedtowrite. Whenyouactwithpurpose,youcreateintentionsthatareimportanttoyou Theyexciteyou.Importantly,theyspuryoutotakeaction.Forexample,youno longer scramble each morning after wasting precious time snoozing, checking socialmedia,andwatchingtelevision.Instead,yousetyourintention(preferably thenightbefore),whichinformsyourbehaviorthenextmorning. Ideally, your intentions will exhilarate you. You’ll look forward to making themhappen. For example, you might create a morning routine designed to help you to loseweight.Thethoughtofreachingyourdesiredweightshouldthrillyou,and influenceyourbehavioraccordingly! Youmaycomeupwitharoutinethat’llhelpyoutorelaxandfocus.Inthi case,findingyourcenterandstartingyourdayfreeofstressshouldexciteyou! You might develop a routine that’ll spur you to start that side busines you’ve been thinking about launching. The prospect of earning a side income andperhapsevengrowingtheventureintoafull-timebusiness,shouldgalvanize you! Mypointisthatintentionalityisacrucialpartofcreatingandmaintaininga qualitymorningroutine.Thebestpartisthatyou’reincompletecontrol. You decide what you’d like to accomplish. Then, you create a morning routinethatperfectlycomplementsthatintention. Canyouseehowstartingyourmorninginthismannercanpositivelyimpac the rest of your day? You’ll feel more rested, energized, and focused, all o
whichwillmakeyoumoreeffective.
