Movement, Learning & Performance 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

i) Fundamental Movement Skills ii) Movement Concepts and Themes iii) Manipulative Skills/ Object Control Skills iv) Body Management Skills v) Cooperative Skills vi) Game Skills

Movement Concepts & Themes § Process of moving rather than the product of correctly performing the skill § Creativity is rewarded § Movement Concept Categories: 1. Body awareness 2. Space awareness 3. Qualities of movement 4. Relationships (Pangrazi & Beighle, 2014)

Body Awareness

1. Body shapes 2. Balance or weight bearing 3. Transfer of body weight 4. Flight

5. Space Awareness 6. 1. General or personal space 2. Direction 3. Level 4. Pathways 7. 5. Planes (Pangrazi & Beighle, 2014)

Qualities of movement  Time or speed  Force  Flow

Relationship  With whom or to what the body relates  The position of a performer to a piece of apparatus or other performers  Can define the body parts of a single performer Teaching movement skills and concepts

1. Set and define the movement tasks 1. 2. 3. 4.

What to do Where to move How to move With whom or what to move

2. Experiment and explore 1. Set limits 2. Ask children to develop the task in different ways

3. Use contrasting terms to stimulate variety

3. Observe and discuss various solutions 1. Watch others 2. Watch demonstrations 3. Encourage variety of responses 4. Refine and expand solutions to the movement task 1. Integrating student ideas to refine and develop new ideas 2. Encourage cooperative learning (Pangrazi & Beighle, 2014)

Manipulative Skills/ Object Control Skills   

Involve using an implement with the hands and/or feet § Develop hand-eye and foot-eye coordination § Catching, throwing, striking & kicking

iv) Body Management Skills  

§ Large muscle groups used to control the body § For example: agility, coordination, strength, balance and flexibility

    

§ § § § §

Often involves the use of apparatus Maximise participation and practice Differentiate activities Provide opportunity to revisit activities to consolidate learning Ensure safe practices are adopted

§ Challenge with rhythm, time and apparatus (Pangrazi & Beighle, 2014)

Safety with Apparatus 1. Use mats to absorb shock – where they may land or fall 2. Carry apparatus, not drag it – put instructions on cooperating to do this prior to carrying it 3. Activity only when directed by teacher – no playing on, in or around it until instructed 4. Instruction precedes activity on all apparatus – verbal, demonstrations and signs beside equipment to reinforce what is required 5. Use return activities to increase movement potential of apparatus – jump/hop/skip after completion whilst returning to the start 6. Encourage students to work slowly with apparatus – improves balance, agility and control...
