Leadership In Movies− Invictus 1) What is the movie plot? This film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with South African rugby captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela recognizes that in the aftermath of Apartheid, his country remains racially and economically segregated. Mandela rallies South Africa's rugby team as they make their run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship, claiming he will pull his people together through the common language of sport. 2) What are some leadership traits we see in Francois? When Francois first meet with Nelson Mandela, he asks from the team coach what methods he uses as a leader to inspire and motivate his team members. He is a good example of transactional leadership. He said he tries to lead them by being an example. “Those who lead by example show that they are trustworthy, hard-working, and focused on the needs of the team.” He is a good listener; he knows Mandela is a much more experienced leader than him and therefore he pays full attention to learn something useful. He also shows good traits as respect to whom is in front of him, dedication to his team and its goals. 3) What are some traits we see in President Mandela’s character that shows he’s a good leader? There are many scenes in the film where we see Nelson Mandela interact with different people in terms of race and personality. He is the perfect example of transformational leadership. In each scene, he manages to influence the people with his behavior and his speech. For instance, when meeting with Pienaar he serves tea to him though he is the president. He is also informed about the person in front of him. We can see this from the scene where he asks about the Francois’s injured leg or when he practices team players’ names before meeting them. According to Mandela, leadership is allowing one to expect more from himself, inspiring someone to achieve not only to be their best, but to achieve more than he imagines. 4) What did you learn from this movie that can help you become a better leader? The movie brilliantly displays two different leaders who shows different leadership traits and how those traits help them in various situations. We can learn how to inspire someone like Nelson Mandela who manages to touch every person’s soul and brain and plants inspiration seed in them. We can also learn devotion and responsibility from Francois who does his best to be a great team leader and transform his team from loosely structured one team to winners of world cup....
