Description

N120 Nursing Evolution This term has been the most interesting thus far. I have learned so much throughout my second term in Nursing Core. The classes I am currently on the brink of completing (with finals just ahead) are: introduction to medical surgical nursing, pharmacology, nursing 121L-A, and nursing 121L-B. Each of these courses presented their own set of struggles and accomplishments. Introduction to medical surgical nursing was intimidating at first, as the content in the Lewis book seemed extremely difficult to understand. But with the patience and clarity from professor Sarkissian, I was able to comprehend the material. The most interesting chapter was at the end of this course when we learned about strokes. This topic was close to my heart because recently my father experienced a TIA, transient ischemic attack. I now know how I can help my father in preventing possible further complications or strokes. The main teaching and education I can provide to him is nutrition, as he needs to clean up his diet. This is in order to prevent the accumulation or increased buildup of atherosclerosis, plaque. The second advice I can give him is that it would be beneficial to get him on a daily exercise plan. Something as simple as a daily walk will help his health and mental state significantly. Pharmacology has been a challenge. I knew going into this class that it was going to be difficult, and the main reason I felt this way is because learning about different medications is hard, and for me, uninteresting. Luckily, because intro to med surg and pharm are taught in a way that they mirror each chapter concurrently, really has made it much easier. I was able to understand the medication first, then learn about the disease that it treats. Both of my lab classes were interesting. 121L-A was held at a COVID testing site in El Monte, while 121L-B was held on campus in a simulation type setting. Due to the virus, our classes were very small which allowed great relationships to form. This is where I gained some amazing friendships that I know will last a lifetime....
