Patrick Edwards Dr. Anderson ANTH-102 29 October 2019 Homework Questions: “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” 1. What are two rituals you read about in the article? Which rituals seems familiar? Which ones seemed odd? Reading the article, some interesting rituals I read about were on the basis of the Nacirema culture to belief that the human body is ugly and has the tendency to debilitate and disease. The only means these people have to avert these dangers is to have shrines in the home dedicated for this purpose. In addition, those of high stature, may have multiple shrines for this purpose in their households. This portion of the Naciremas’ culture was different to something I’ve seen or experienced just in the fact that the people seem to have a great emphasis on self and the value of the individual/family, describing the shrines themselves as something “only discussed with children, and then only during the period when they are being initiated into these mysteries”(Miner, 503) This differs from other spiritual groups that tend to be more communicative to expand knowledge and invite more foreign to the culture. An aspect of the rituals that seemed familiar was the portion of the ritual when a priest would conduct ceremonies with holy water as a symbol of purity. This is done is done in Catholic churches and has a similar pure in purifying the body as a means of removing sin from the individual. 2. Discuss two ritual specialists and their jobs as mentioned in the article.

● Holy-mouth-man: seeked out once or twice a year; these practicers have a let of objects that are used as a means of exorcism of the evils of the mouth. He drilled holes in the place of decayed areas of the teeth ● Listeners: witch doctors with the power to exorcise devils that are in the heads of those that have been “bewitched”. Parents are the main blame for children being bewitched and it’s usually due to mothers teaching their children about the “secret body rituals” (Miner, 506) 3. The article was written in 1956, [web link] for updates on the Nacirema people. Below please briefly note who they are. Please put the answers in your own words -- do not just copy and paste from the article. The Nacirema reading are actually more exaggerated perceptions of American culture and society. These views are focusing primarily on doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and seek to bring irony to the things we do that really are quite primitive and archaic in what we should partake in in our day to day lives. All in all, I’m able to see the little things like continuing to get our teeth drilled in on monthly/yearly basis is just one example of the “primitive” things we endure for society beauty and perception, really making our decisions seem no different than the other cultures we judge....
