Description

A3- Nacirema Assignment 1a. The people of nacirema culture believe that bodies need to be cleansed. This is what is right to them and what is necessary. 1b. The nacirema people all have a common thinking and understanding that the human body is generally ugly and dirty. This is thought of as a fact in their culture, and they all seek to better the human body by cleansing and completing rituals. This is something everyone in their culture does, and accepts. They think of this idea as an agreed upon fact and expectation. 1c. Completing daily rituals for the body is accepted and expected in nacirema culture and is almost a rule of behavior. In nacirema culture it could almost be taboo to not do these rituals as this is an important part of their culture, and is used for the purpose of cleansing the body. 1d. In nacirema culture , they will do something called a mouth-rite, which includes bundling hogs hairs with magical substances and putting them in one's mouth. This is a tradition that is done by everyone, and is part of their daily lives. 1e. Having a shrine is a big part of the nacirema culture, and in every home there is at least one, along with magical powders, charms, and other materials. These are some of the most important materials, that are need for rituals.

2a. I felt that many of the rituals of the nacirema people we're very weird and unusual to me. I didn't understand why they did these things and why they are very specific. I especially was puzzled by the mouth-rite ritual,Which consists of putting a bundle of hog hairs and magical powders into the mouth and moving the bundle in certain gestures. This ritual was extremely bizarre to me. I thought it was revolting and I didn't understand why this was necessary. Another ritual I find extremely confusing is another mouth ritual in which a holy mouth man is to find any holes in the teeth from decay and enlarge them and fill them with magical materials. This ritual is puzzling because it creates bigger problems. 2b. The reason i find these rituals strange and unusual would most likely be because i have only grown up in a society where these rituals are against many norms, and are unlike

anything we've seen before. For most people these rituals are unusual because of ethnocentrism, which makes us believe that our own cultures are the norm or superior to others.

3.In Texas a lot of us say and think that everything is bigger in Texas. and it is something that you hear a lot and mostly everyone thinks like this. To an alien it would sound weird, but to texans it is something that you always hear, we accept this phrase because its what we’re used to. This “magical thinking” is the most common and it is generally agreed upon and accepted by nearly everybody. For texans this is the norm and its what many people think of when they think about texas....
