ANCR: A transgender rights group has announced that they have filed an official complaint with a school district in Ontario for discrimination against a first-grader who identifies as a girl even though she was born a boy. CTV’s Madeline Smith has the story.

Then one day during winter break, her mother received a call saying her child could no longer use the girls’ restrooms, but instead could use the boys’, faculty, or nurse’s facilities.

The district claims they had the other students and the parents in mind when making this decision, as well as “the future impact a boy with male genitals using a girls’ bathroom would have as Coy [grows] older.”

The Canadian Psychological Association reports that many transgender adults say they have felt “discomfort with their gender as early as they can remember,” and, “some children as young as age 3 show early signs of gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder.” Coy’s attorney, Michael Silverman, is a part of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, says they have filed their complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission. He says the complaint will be a “test of Ontario’s Anti-Discrimination laws.”

SILVERMAN: For many transgender people, discrimination is a daily part of life. Unfortunately for Coy, it has started very early. RPTR: This case will be the first to challenge a restroom restriction under Ontario’s anti-discrimination act.
