Description of Procedure Nasogastric intubation is the action of inserting the nasogastric tube through the nares all the way down to the stomach. Feedings can also be administered through these tubes.
Indications Indicated for a patient who is not able to receive feeding by themselves through mouth or if they need to suction gastric content.
CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Inspect the nares, set up equipment, lubricate the NG tube, insert the tube only when the patient is swallowing, verify placement, secure tube, call xray to confirm placement.
Outcomes/Evaluation Client Education The patient will have moist oral mucosa, and have no bleeding while the NG tube is in place.
Potential Complications Patient could develop metabolic alkalosis, patient can also have gastric pain.

Teach the patient about oral care and how they need to follow orders to prevent adverse effects.
Nursing Interventions Monitor the patients hydration status, constantly check the patients drainage or administer food, check for displacement of NG tube.
