Free Jazz Style Free style pioneers explored ways to create new music which used many aspects of traditional jazz while “freeing” the performers from some of the standard performance practices. Sometimes Free Jazz musicians would create music free from harmonic progressions, or even key centers (playing in a certain key), and play “dissonant” note combinations (notes that do not go together well, creating an edgy sound (There would be classes “wrong notes” in a traditional music setting. Sometimes the music would emphasize “free” rhythmic concepts, (not playing with a certain tempo, or any time feel at all.) By exploring ways to free themselves from some of the traditional elements that could “confine” the music, Free Jazz musicians could express themselves in a new way within the Jazz tradition. Thins to listen for: “Sectional” arranging style melody presentation- Cecil Taylor uses a big band arranging technique to present the melody in the free style melodic presentation. Listen for the repetitive chord section alternating with a single note melodic line section. Both sections for not really have a key center, purposefully “dissonant” to create tension...
